Hayden Christensen couldn’t simply figure out his steps while filming George Lucas’s Star Wars prequel trilogy. Christensen kept falling frequently, especially during the filming of Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones. In a resurfaced bloopers gag reel, Natalie Portman is seen having way too much fun at Christensen’s misery.
Christensen and Portman played the protagonists Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala respectively in Lucas’s prequel films. They are the parents of the original trilogy characters Luke and Leia, played by Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher.
Star Wars Prequel Trilogy Bloopers Show Hayden Christensen’s Clumsiness
Hayden Christensen‘s clumsy falls and Natalie Portman‘s infectious laughs were the highlights of the bloopers from Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. Fans found these scenes precious, especially since the dangerous Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader looked adorable in these scenes. While fans were not completely satisfied with the pairing of Christensen and Portman in the film, this video could change some of their minds.
In one of the scenes, he is battling with Count Dooku when he loses his balance in a lightsaber swing and falls forward. In another scene, the poor guy falls flat on his stomach when trying to chase a bunch of slippery bounty hunters. In a combination scene with Portman, he tries to make a swift exit from Padmé’s bed chambers only to trip and fall once again.
Fans came up with some hilarious comments under the video posted on YouTube. One fan suggested that it explained why Obi-Wan decided to cut off the limbs of Anakin in the film. Another wondered how Anakin was supposed to bring balance to the force when he couldn’t balance his own body. One fan made an interesting play on the Star Wars mantra.
Another fan joked that the name Skywalker became questionable after seeing these blooper scenes. A fan found the actor’s clumsiness adorable while another commented on how Portman’s laugh in these scenes made them happy. Some of the fan reactions read:
I can see why Obi-Wan cut off Anakin’s limbs. They are useless as hell. – @Mudkip971
How is anakin supposed to bring balance to the force when he can’t balance his own body. – @Cre8iveGaming3
May the floor be with you. – @Ryhethse
now the name Skywalker is very questionable….lol – @CaptainPikeachu
Hayden is so clumsy, it’s adorable – @Nihaal_Lp
Natalie makes me so happy. Her laugh is just one that makes you smile. – @_amritpannu_
Besides seeing Christensen tripping over, slipping, or smashing onto the floor, the video also contained some of the funniest bloopers in the film. For example, when the Black Swan actress asks Christensen to let her go, even when the actor forgets to grab hold of her hand. Or when Anakin cries out, “God, that’s hot!” while drinking a soup on Naboo with Padmé.
Hayden Christensen Injured Himself A Lot While Filming Lightsaber Duels
Hayden Christensen shared with Star Wars Insider Magazine that filming the lightsaber scenes in the movie was very painful. He shared that he felt like dealing with real swords in those scenes. In particular, the iconic duel between his character and Ewan McGregor‘s Obi-Wan Kenobi required an enormous amount of training with stunt coordinator Nick Gillard.
Along with the duels, the actor also had to perform some intense stunts. He was asked to ride a reek, fly a speeder, and had to jump and run a lot. He shared that his athletic nature helped him to do the scenes. He shared with Star Wars Insider:
“l have a bit of an athletic background, so l was able to pick it up. I went home with a few bruises.”
Despite Christensen’s best efforts, his role in the prequel trilogy was heavily criticized. He became a meme material for fans for many years before his films gained some sympathy from new generation Star Wars fans.
All Star Wars prequel trilogy films are now available for streaming on Disney+.
