Despite the success and popularity of Game of Thrones, Martin still thinks Six Feet Under’s final episode had the greatest ending ever. He even quipped that no show can ever top its finale.

George R.R. Martin On His Ultimate Favorite TV Show Finale

George R.R. Martin penned on his website his thoughts on HBO’s Six Feet Under. The series ran from 2001 to 2005, and it was one of the critically acclaimed shows during those years.

If I had to pick one episode that was even more perfect than all the others on the list, though, it would have to be the final episode of Six Feet Under. I liked that series well enough, though I cannot say I loved it as much as I loved Rome or Deadwood or Fargo or a few other shows missing from the list, but that last episode was far and away the best finale in the entire history of television, and I cannot imagine how anyone could possibly do better.”

This is, indeed, a huge praise from one of the most celebrated writers of this generation. Of course, he did not forget to share his favorite episodes from Game of Thrones.

They are talking about “Blackwater,” one of the episodes I wrote for GAME OF THRONES. (I scripted four. And yes, “Blackwater” is my own favorite of those, although I thought “The Lion and the Rose” turned out very well too, and I have a soft spot for that one).”

Game of Thrones ended in 2019, concluding the tale with Season 8, also known as the installment that received the most backlash.

George R.R. Martin Was Not Impressed By Game Of Thrones Season 8 Ending

Even Martin was not thrilled with the direction of Game of Thrones. He told the New York Times that “by season five and six, and certainly seven and eight, I was pretty much out of the loop.”

The author was no longer supervising the show, and that could explain why it took a detour. He also told EW:

I haven’t read the scripts and haven’t been able to visit the set because I’ve been working on Winds.”

Martin’s agent, Paul Haas, shockingly revealed that the writer got very frustrated with the showrunners’ creative vision for the series. He said via Tinderbox: HBO’s Ruthless Pursuit of New Frontiers:

George loves Dan and Dave, but after season five, he did start to worry about the path they were going because George knows where the story goes. He started saying, ‘You’re not following my template.’

This sounds very disheartening as Martin took a lot of time and effort in writing his novels, and fans expect to see the same story unfold on the small screen. This goes to explain why Game of Thrones Season 8 was not his favorite.
