Ever since the colossal success of Margot Robbie’s Barbie against Cillian Murphy’s Oppenheimer, Mattel has been optimistic about the chances of a sequel to the blockbuster. Although Greta Gerwig has been hesitant about making Barbie 2, the company seems to be far more willing to capitalize on its success.
However, addressing Mattel’s desire for a sequel, Margot Robbie broke her silence on the possibility of a second film. Speaking with AP Entertainment, the actress expressed her doubts and opinions about a sequel being produced. Although Robbie appeared unsure about the possibility, Mattel has undoubtedly been planning for a sequel.

Mattel Aims To Make a Sequel to Barbie
Greta Gerwig created a surprisingly massive hit in 2023 with her comedy-drama Barbie. Featuring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the movie made a billion-dollar success at the global box office. Released alongside Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Barbie simply stole the show with its pink wash.
Hands down, Barbie’s commercial success has been shocking news for all. Even Mattel seems to be awestruck with how the movie helmed by Warner Bros made a colossal impact at the box office. Thus, now, following its grand success, Mattel appears to be willing to capitalize more from it.
Hoping to create sequels, the company appears to be optimistic about making Barbie 2. Although Greta Gerwig had never planned for something as such, Mattel seems to be adamant about their plan. Perhaps aiming to create a potential universe like Marvel, Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz confirmed looking to branch out on Barbie’s success.

Margot Robbie’s Opinions on Barbie Sequel
Although it’s not entirely on Mattel to decide these matters, the company appears hellbent on producing sequels. Despite Greta Gerwig previously stating that making a sequel within half a year after Barbie’s success won’t truly get off the ground, Mattel appears to be in some kind of a hurry for a follow-up.
Addressing the company’s desire for a sequel, Margot Robbie was asked about her opinion on the same. During her interview with AP Entertainment, the actress was asked about the possibility of a potential sequel. To which Robbie broke her silence and shared her doubts.
“I think we put everything into this one. We didn’t build it to be a trilogy or something. It was like Greta put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next.”
Certainly, neither Margot Robbie nor Greta Gerwig had been planning for a sequel. But with Mattel’s adamant desire, there appears a conflict. Although it seems that Barbie 2 is more than unlikely to happen, since Gerwig doesn’t want her creative team to “fall into a bit of a trap” in setting up multiple follow-ups, Mattel seems to be planning otherwise.
