Daniel Craig is credited to have portrayed one of the most popular forms of James Bond. Thanks to his British charm and his physicality, he brought a ruggedness to the sophisticated role, quickly making him one of the most loved actors to have played 007. Over the course of 15 years, he helped modernize the mythos while also keeping it true to its original form.
However, even though he clearly established his genre of James Bond, the actor was hesitant to take up the role. It wasn’t until he ended up in a bar that he realized how ‘great’ the situation was.
Daniel Craig’s Hilarious Yet Pitiful Bar Story
When Daniel Craig was first invited by Barbara Broccoli, he had no idea that he was going to be made the next 007. When he was offered the role, he was hesitant and unsure about it. But then after finally getting the call and a hilarious trip to a bar, he was convinced how big of a deal it was.
In an interview (via Express.co.UK) Craig had revealed,
“I was in Whole Foods getting some weekly shopping and the phone went and I picked it up and Barbara said ‘Over to you kiddo’ and I was like ‘Okay’ and she was like ‘Yeah, that’s it, it’s happening.’ I walked into the off-licence section of Whole Foods and bought a bottle of vodka and a bottle of vermouth and a cocktail shaker and the cocktail glass and went home and started mixing myself these drinks.”
After having about three drinks, he ended up going to a bar,
“It was kind of rather sad because I couldn’t tell anyone… I went to a bar where I had three more and I must have had a smile on my face because the barman was like ‘What are you so happy about?’ and I was like ‘I can’t tell you but something great has happened’ and he said ‘Well… this one is on me.'”
And ever since then, he has enjoyed the ride and said his goodbyes with no regret.
The Reason Why Daniel Craig Was Hesitant To Play James Bond
Fifteen years and five iconic movies later, Craig finally said goodbye to one of his most successful roles ever. Now finally retired from a role that gave him immense fame, he once revealed that he wasn’t keen on taking the role. In an interview back in 2021, the actor stated,
“Look: when I was a kid of course I dreamt of being James Bond but I dreamt of being Spider-Man and Superman and Batman and everybody else. But as an actor I just thought ‘That’s not happening’ and I was really happy with that, I was doing some really interesting jobs and my career was going great guns so it wasn’t an ambition of mine.”
But after a hard push from his family and friends, he eventually ended up taking the role and ended up doing four more movies until his last one, No Time to Die.
Daniel Craig’s James Bond franchise can be streamed on Amazon Prime.
