Anticipation for a third Dune film has skyrocketed with the release of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, and the filmmaker has heightened this excitement by teasing that the upcoming sequel will unravel the secrets surrounding the mysterious sandworms. After being depicted as an invisible threat in the 2021 film, Dune: Part Two brings the creatures into the spotlight with entire villages riding on their spacious backs.
However, the film never really reveals how the Fremen warriors dismount from the massive sandworms. When asked about the same in an interview with IndieWire, Villeneuve shared that the mystery surrounding the enormous sand creatures will be revealed in the potential next installment, Dune Messiah.
Denis Villeneuve to Reveal the Sandworms Mystery in the Potential Threequel
After their brief appearance in Dune: Part One, the giant sandworms take center stage in multiple sequences throughout the sequel. And filmmaker Denis Villeneuve has described the scene featuring Timothee Chalamet riding a sandworm as his “favorite” moment in the film.
The film also depicts that the Fremen warriors can control and utilize sandworms during battle and transportation across the vast landscape of Arrakis. With the intriguing depictions of these creatures, fans have been curious about how the people riding them are able to get off.
In his recent conversation with IndieWire, Denis Villeneuve admitted that he has also been getting numerous queries about the “crazy Uber system” in Dune: Part Two. While he has devised a solution, the filmmaker shared that the fans would have to wait for the next film to get the answer.
“I knew how. I found a way. It was not dramatically necessary in ‘Part Two’ to see someone get out of the worm, but I know how to do it. And I can’t wait to put that on screen.”
Villeneuve also reflected on his commitment to realism as he shared that filming sandworm scenes giant structures or shadow makers to achieve believable lighting effects. He also stressed his unwillingness to compromise on the scene, describing it as “one of the most complex things” he has ever done.
Denis Villeneuve is Planning to Adapt Dune Messiah For a Threequel
While the studio has not confirmed a threequel to the Dune film series, Denis Villeneuve has expressed his desire to work on a third film. The filmmaker has shared that he is looking forward to adapting Frank Herbert’s second novel in the series Dune Messiah for the third installment, which would also be his last movie in the film series.
“Dune Messiah should be the last Dune movie for me,” the filmmaker told Time magazine in an interview. He has also shared that he has started working on the film. “The screenplay is almost finished but it is not finished. It will take a little time,” he said before adding, “There’s a dream of making a third movie … it would make absolute sense to me.”
With the sequel leaving fans on a cliffhanger and the film’s box office performance, the odds appear to be in favor of a third installment. Dune: Part Two has recorded an impressive $32.1 million gross and is expected to gross $70-$80 million domestically and $160 million worldwide in its opening weekend.
