It has been more than a decade since Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man showed off Andrew Garfield as the titular character for the first time. Apart from giving superhero fans a Spider-Man they would go on to love forever and ever, the film also had one of the best on-screen pairings to date – Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone as Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy.

While their on-screen love story was the personification of ‘adorable,’ the ending was simply heart-wrenching to watch. Perhaps it was the connection between the two actors that made the act seem so raw. Speaking about the relationship between the two, Andrew Garfield seemed to have felt that connection with Emma Stone the moment the actress stepped onto the set for screen testing. The rest, as they say, is history.

Being on the set for hours on end sure can be exhausting and Andrew Garfield felt the same. Talking to Teen Vogue, Garfield recalled how he was so bored during screen-testing that he would pretend to be either Tom Hanks or Seth Rogen. However, the moment Emma Stone walked into the room, a bolt of energy ran through Garfield.

“It was like I woke up when she came in. She was the last person to screen test and I was so bored of it by them that I was mucking about – I’d been pretending I was Tom Hanks or Seth Rogen.”

Garfield continued that shooting with Stone was nothing less than exciting.

“Throughout shooting, it was wild and exciting. I couldn’t help but try to say with her, keep pace with her, and not let her get away. Like an animal preying on a smaller animal, but a wily smaller animal.”

In fact, the two fit together like pieces of a puzzle where one would fulfill what the other lacked. Garfield had trouble shooting the love scenes for the movie but Stone’s professionalism and energy made it much, much easier for him.

From intention to execution, a ton of thought goes into the making of a film. These thoughts and ideas are responsible for whether the film will be a memorable one or not. One of these factors include the chemistry between the two lead actors and it’s safe to say that the chemistry between Stone and Garfield played a huge role in the success of The Amazing Spider-Man franchise.

Talking about her experience working with Garfield, Stone told Teen Vogue how the Hacksaw Ridge actor would help her out with scenes by giving her so much to react to.

“Andrew is one of the most giving actors I’ve ever worked with. If I needed to get to a place of love or sadness in a scene, he’d leave messages on my phone to replay, or slip in lines off-camera for a different reaction than what was scripted. He gave me so much to react to.”

It looks like both actors complimented each other perfectly. Stone and Garfield dated for four years before moving on with their lives. Despite the breakup, the duo is still on good terms with each other.

The Amazing Spider-Man is available to stream on Disney+.
