In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Winona Ryder talked extensively about her insecurities in her personal life and her career in Hollywood. She specifically mentioned one particular incident that affected her career and how it led to her being blacklisted and unable to find work in the industry. She was arrested for shoplifting in 2001 at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills. Regarding the incident, she recalls,

“I definitely retreated…I was in San Francisco. But I also wasn’t getting offers. I think it was a very mutual break.”

She also explains the cause of the incident as being under the influence of painkillers. Her doctor overprescribed them when she broke her arm and consuming them left her disoriented.
