James Gunn Receives Positive Response During Film Testing

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will see James Gunn collaborating with Marvel Studios for the final time as director. According to industry insider Jeff Schneider, the film looks to have gained positive responses during its initial screen testing. James Gunn, for his part, has been vocal about his satisfaction in making the film in the way he had imagined. The director in an interview with Entertainment Weekly is quoted to have said,

“Once I started doing the first Guardians movie, I felt drawn to it. I felt called to it if that makes any sense. So I feel very good [about Vol. 3] because I feel like I did everything that I possibly could to make this trilogy as good as it can possibly be. And I feel incredibly blessed and fortunate that I had all these people around me making it. It’s the biggest blessing of my life.”

How Relevant are Film Test Screenings?

James Gunn’s final feature with Marvel was appreciated during its initial testing. This sentiment was echoed by GWW’s K C Walsh as well. He also spoke about the ambivalent nature of these testings and their validity in the context of a release. Walsh said that despite favorable initial opinions pouring in, these reactions do not represent the large general audience who are the ultimate judges of a film’s success at the box office.

He added that the people who are appointed to see screenings are most often than not related to the project in some way. The comic book aficionado quoted the example of the recently released Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania which was praised during testing but did not find favor with the public during its official worldwide release.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will release in theatres on May 5th, 2023
