When the Clint Eastwood starter Dirty Harry came out in 1971, it was a hit. Not because the movie had a captivating storyline, which it did, but because of the screen presence of Eastwood that made the journey even more fun to watch. His no-nonsense persona became one with the character, making it one of his best and most loved iconic roles.

However, before Eastwood could have starred in the movie, the role was offered to a long list of A-listers including Paul Newman. While the rest passed the role, Newman had his own ideas about why he rejected the role. The actor was known for his liberal values and ideology and had already rejected other roles involving ‘authority figures’.

Newman was a fervent opposer of the conservative ideology and so the role went to Eastwood who happily accepted it. Despite knowing the actor well, Eastwood, couldn’t really understand why he would reject the role, the same as he stated in an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2008.

”Of course, my first question was, ‘Why didn’t he want to do it?’ He thought the character was sort of a radical guy on the right, so politically he couldn’t do it. I didn’t see it that way…. I’ll miss him. He was just one of those guys you liked.”

However, fans are certainly glad the classic ended up in the hands of Eastwood, who made the franchise what it is today.

The Dirty Harry franchise ran from 1971 to 1988 and continues to remain a fan-favorite classic. The majority of its popularity comes from how well Clint Eastwood portrayed the iconic character. While the Hollywood legend did add many aspects of his own persona to the character, he was also inspired by another ‘Hollywood Legend’ and one of his favorite actors, James Cagney. In the same interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor remarked,

“When he comes out in White Heat eating a chicken leg and blasting a guy in the trunk of a car, you go, ‘Yeah, that’s offsetting, but in a nice way’. The scene in Dirty Harry where I’m eating a hot dog in that shootout, that’s a steal.”

Despite the influence, Eastwood’s portrayal of Harry Callahan remains an unforgettable one, continuing to create an indelible impact on the audience and cinema.

The Dirty Harry franchise can be streamed on Apple TV.
