Cillian Murphy’s portrayal of Thomas Shelby in Peaky Blinders will forever be etched in television history. From the show’s premiere in 2013 to its poignant finale in April 2022, Murphy’s performance was nothing short of mesmerizing.
Recently, Murphy teased its fans that he is open to the idea of a Peaky Blinders movie. But there’s one condition. He sat with Barbie actress Margot Robbie for Variety and discussed his potential return.
Cillian Murphy ‘Open‘ to a Peaky Blinders Movie Under One Condition
The Oppenheimer actor, who played Thomas “Tommy” Shelby for six seasons in Peaky Blinders, is still open to doing a Peaky Blinders movie. Cillian Murphy and Margot Robbie came together for Variety’s Actors on Actors series and that’s where Murphy shared his thought.
In the interview, Robbie said that she is “obsessed” with the series and asked him if there’s any chance of a spin-off movie.
Robbie said:
“In my opinion, there are two kinds of people in this world. There are the people who are obsessed with Peaky Blinders, and then there’s the people who haven’t seen Peaky Blinders. I obviously sit in the first category, so can we please talk about Tommy fucking Shelby for just one minute? I mean, that was years and years of your life.”
“Yeah, it’s like 10. That was also a 10-year adventure. We started shooting at the end of 2012,” Murphy responded.
Then, Robbie asked him about a movie. “Is there going to be a spinoff movie?”
“I mean, I’m open to the idea. I’ve always thought that if there’s more story to tell …,” Murphy gave his view on the continuity.
“Please do it. Please! Obviously, I’ve now revealed that I am a big fan of yours, not just Peaky Blinders,” Robbie enthusiastically said.
“Well it’s kind of sometimes hard to kinda move into the film format, and I do like the ambiguity of the ending. I know. But I’m always open to like a great script,” Murphy added.
For six seasons, Peaky Blinders delivered numerous iconic moments that have become etched in the minds of fans.
Show Creator Stephen Knight Said He Has Almost Finished Writing the Script
In an interview with Heart Breakfast, creator Steven Knight confirmed that the script is almost written and that shooting is set to begin soon.
“Yes, I’m writing it right now.”
“I’m nearly done writing it, and we’re going to shoot it… I’m setting up some film and television studios in Digbeth in Birmingham. We’re going to shoot it at the studios in Digbeth, and on location in Digbeth in Birmingham. Digbeth and Small Heath is where the Peaky Blinders actually roamed. So it’s like Peaky’s coming home basically.”
Also, earlier, on Today FM with radio hosts Dermot Whelan and Dave Moore, Murphy was asked about the script of the movie. He said: (Via The Independent)
“Yes, I believe so. I’ve still not read it [the script] but that’s the plan, the plan is to make a film and to continue the story but in the cinematic world rather than on the television. The television part of the story is finished. If there’s more stories to tell, I’m there. I just haven’t read it yet but it’s close apparently”.
Peaky Blinders is a timeless classic in the realm of television storytelling and fans would love to see it as a movie adaptation.
