One can expect Christopher Nolan to pull through; be it an interview or a multi-million dollar flick. The man behind Oppenheimer spoke to the WIRED’s Maria Streshinsky in an interview about his upcoming venture, the next dot in his trajectory. The interview might have been because of a movie, but it definitely wasn’t about it. There were talks of the unprecedented times humans have found themselves in. Humanity was at crossroads in Oppenheimer’s era. The situation today is no different with the meteoric rise of AI. No one can know for certain what the future holds. Times are scary.
Oppenheimer left a mark on Christopher Nolan’s mind
Christopher Nolan knows that better than anyone. Having been connected to Oppenheimer’s story for so long, no wonder there is an element of dismay in his outlook. Humanity lives in an age of endless possibilities. What they have glossed over is that our end is one of them.
No wonder all this is scary. Working on his upcoming release, the 52-year-old had a difficult time pushing all these thoughts to the back of his mind. The idea has left an indelible mark on him, to the extent that he was relieved once the movie reached its conclusion.
Oppenheimer is kind of a horror movie
Yet, the Prestige director’s thoughts are not gone. They persist. In Oppenheimer that is. The movie is a reflection of the Tenet director’s somber thoughts. It is darkness incarnate. Oppenheimer was supposed to be a biopic. It has turned out to be a lot more than that.
Christopher Nolan says he showed ‘OPPENHEIMER’ to a filmmaker recently who said it’s kind of a horror movie.

In the interview, the Inception director said,
“I showed it to a filmmaker recently who said it’s kind of a horror movie. I don’t disagree.”
According to the man himself, there is no mistake in his friend’s assessment. The elements of the movie do make it “kind of a horror movie.”
The real horror
A quintessential horror movie has many elements which contribute to the experience – a paranormal entity, jump-scares. But Oppenheimer doesn’t have any of that. Albeit not in the conventional sense.
The only paranormal entity in the movie is humanity and the unprecedented power it holds. The only jump scare is the unearthing of a power that has the potential to wipe out civilizations. These are propositions that are indeed scary to imagine. Oppenheimer might truly be a horror film.
Oppenheimer is set to release on 21 July 2023.
