Tim Burton’s films have had a cultural impact that not many directors have been able to achieve. His projects possess a unique aesthetic and feel that makes it his distinctive style. The perfect examples of projects like these have to be The Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, Edward Scissorhands, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Through works like this, he has established himself as one of the most talented filmmakers.
One would expect the filmmaker, animator, and artist to be proud of the works he made, watching them frequently, and reminisce on the hard work and dedication that it took to create these masterpieces. This, however, is not the case as Burton revealed that he does not like watching his past projects after production is complete.
Tim Burton Does Not Like Watching His Past Projects
Tim Burton recently did an interview with The Independent. Here, he spoke on many subjects, including why he does not like watching his own films. The director has been a part of many different types of projects throughout his career, a majority of which have been extremely big-scale. With projects like this, there is always a huge amount of stress and responsibility that lies on the shoulders of everyone, especially that of the filmmaker.
“That’s why it is hard for me to watch the movies afterwards, because I still feel the emotional whatever of it. I don’t get a release from that.”
Burton revealed that this is one of the main reasons why he does not like watching his own projects after production has finished. Elaborating on this, he confessed that whenever he looks back and watches these films, he is constantly reminded of the stress that he was under while making them, making him feel those feelings all over again.
Tim Burton Does Love The Filmmaking Process
Tim Burton isn’t alone in this, as many actors have confessed to not liking watching their past works. The perfect example of this is the extremely famous actor who worked with the filmmaker on many projects, Johnny Depp. He revealed that he does not like to watch his past works. His reason for this is different from the filmmaker’s, however, as he thinks that his films are none of his business after he has finished acting. Burton is different here from Depp in many ways, as he told The Independent.
“But I do enjoy all the people I’ve worked with. On this last one, Beetlejuice 2, I really enjoyed it. I tried to strip everything and go back to the basics of working with good people and actors and puppets. It was kind of like going back to why I liked making movies.”
The director confessed that even though he does not like watching his films, he loves making them. He elaborated on this, stating that he loves working with people. He took an example of his upcoming work, Beetlejuice 2, where he revealed that he decided to go back to his basics and do exactly the things that made him fall in love with making movies.
