At the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, Deadpool 3 director, Shawn Levy talked with EW  regarding his upcoming Netflix series based on the novel All the Light We Cannot See. During the segment, he also touched on Hugh Jackman‘s debut in MCU, throwing light on how his character, Wolverine’s suit was developed.

Just like everyone, he had been waiting for the X-Men character’s return with the mercenary. It was the reason why he took special care of his character’s iconic yellow suit which is strikingly similar to what the character dons in comics and the ’90s X-Men animated series.

He shared with EW

“Like the rest of the world, I’ve waited two decades to see Wolverine in a whole movie with Deadpool, and I don’t know if this is our last shot at Wolverine on screen, so I was going to make goddamned sure we get the old yellow and blue just once, and that we get it right.”

He explained that his team has gone through “multiple, multiple, multiple iterations and fittings” to ensure that the yellow-blue costume is portrayed in the right way. He also addressed the fans’ reaction when Jackman’s photos were leaked online giving the first glimpse of his iconic suit online.

As far as how this mega project was developed, Levy shared that he didn’t have to worry about it since the studio had ‘an army’ for the project. He further shared with EW

“It also helps that I’m making this movie within the MCU, so I have access to an army of the nerdiest nerds available to a Marvel project.”

He also shared that the titular actor agreed to make the movie “grounded and not feel like a bunch of physical environments filmed on a soundstage.”

It was the very reason that led to filming large chunks of the movie on the actual location that contributed to Jackman’s character leak. However, not many fans were delighted to see Wolverine’s look. Many expressed their concern regarding his full sleeves which highly toned down Jackman’s personality. Even his shoulder pads added more to the costume’s flaws with some even deeming the overall look as “too cartoony.” But, it also met with a positive response which the director himself addressed. In the same interview, he mentioned,

“Fortunately,” he added, “it seems global reaction to those costumes has been overwhelmingly positive, so all’s well that ends well.”

To sum up, the highly-awaited movie is making rounds even for small reasons, and why not, it is going to bring back the insane chemistry that fans saw years before.

Deadpool 3 is scheduled to be released in theatres on May 3, 2024.
