The co-CEO of DC universe recently called out an IMAX blunder that fans also pointed out to the director on Disney+’s part following the debut of his record-smashing 2023 American superhero film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on the streaming platform. Many users claimed that the movie is available to stream in an IMAX ratio, isn’t accurately shown in the thumbnail, and the preview is “just a cropped version of the widescreen shot.”

Gunn-directed original movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, was launched in 2014, followed by two more gigantic sequels. The final installment of the MCU project in the Guardians of the Galaxy film trilogy recently made its streaming debut on Disney+, and fans can’t help but notice the blunder, which was noticeable enough, the IMAX gaffe has caught everyone’s attention.

After its theatrical release, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now available on the giant streaming platform in the IMAX ratio. Nevertheless, fans are debating if it’s the accurate format since a user pointed out that the preview is “just a cropped version of the widescreen shot,” to which Gunn seems to agree as he reacted to the Tweet with a response.

Following the debut of James Gunn-directed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on Disney+, fans called out the inappropriate format of IMAX. Gunn himself reacted to the debate on Twitter. One user claimed,

“I don’t think Disney Plus accurately shows what the two versions look like on screen. The screenshot they used for the IMAX version is just a cropped version of the widescreen shot that’s not what IMAX is,” to this, the director replied, “Yeah the IMAX version isn’t cropped. It’s all new stuff top and bottom.”

VFX supervisor of Marvel Studios, Stephane Ceretti, also entered the discussion, as he subtly pointed out Disney+’s error, which was noticeable on the thumbnails. He wrote:

“The thumbnails are wrong. I don’t know what D+ is doing, but they should not give the thumbnail work to a photoshop challenged graphist. Truth is you get more in IMAX top and bottom. But it’s true that James designed the movie to be a hybrid format very specifically.”

After James Gunn and Stephane Ceretti’s remarks, the giant streaming platform has fixed the thumbnail. Earlier this month, Gunn took to Twitter and wrote, “The ‘widescreen’ version is the mixed aspect ratio and would be my preferred way to watch in your home.” The director advised fans to watch his latest movie on a widescreen version, claiming it’s his preferred way to watch at home for a better viewing experience.
