As much as Samuel L Jackson loves playing the elite Nick Fury who runs a high-tech homeland security initiative capable of handling world-ending threats, he is the polar opposite of that off camera.
In most of his films throughout his career, we’ve seen him steer clear of trusting anybody other than himself, but in reality, he’ll always be grateful for having a wife like LaTanya Richardson and trusts her with his life, quite literally.
In the early days of his career, he struggled a lot to find suitable roles until he landed Jungle Fever in 1991 which he starred in alongside the legend Wesley Snipes.
LaTanya Richardson has been by his side during his struggle phase and held his hand through thick and thin. Jackson, now a legend himself, discloses the dark days when his wife could have given up on him but didn’t.
Samuel L Jackson Doesn’t Remember Much About His Marriage
In his conversation with Jennifer Hudson on her show, he opened up about his history of substance abuse and that his story is completely different from his wife’s. Sharing his wife’s version, he said –
“I actually had to go and talk to her grandfather ’cause he told her he wanted to walk her down the aisle before he died and her living in sin with this man. So I went and asked him for her hand. That’s probably what happened, ’cause I was on drugs. I don’t know what the hell was going on in my life then.”
Obviously, Samuel L. Jackson’s hallucinated and drugged-up version is hilarious.
“My story was I came home one day and she already had these invitations printed up and she gave me a stack and said, ‘Be here,’” he said.
He further added that due to his troubled phase, his wife remembers things way better than he does.
Samuel L Jackson’s Drug Addiction Went Out Of Hand
Achieving the level of success that he enjoys today, wouldn’t have been possible without the love and support of his wife. Even as their marriage has passed the test of time, there were times that he felt his wife had a chance to leave but chose otherwise.
Samuel L. Jackson confessed that he used to pass out on the floor and his wife would find him reeking of alcohol and drugs. But he overextends his gratitude publicly and cherishes his wife that she spent the most valuable years of her life helping him overcome the addiction.
“She could’ve just said, ‘Get out,’ and left me into the world, let me go and be whatever I was going to be,” he told People Magazine.
His wife showed the strongest of resolves to stand by his side. According to him, their daughter Zoe Jackson also played a big role in supporting her father back to sobriety.
