Whenever we talk about The Mummy franchise, the first character that comes to our mind is Brendan Fraser’s Rick O’Connell, set in the 1920s Egypt, the film revolves around the adventurer and a librarian who unknowingly releases Imhotep, a centuries-old mummy. The 1999 film was a massive hit as it received two more sequels, making it one of the best trilogies out there. However, in 2017, fans were disappointed when they learned that instead of getting a 4th film featuring the original cast, the $1.4 billion franchise would get a reboot. Needless to say, the film was not liked by the fans of the original series. But now, the wait for The Mummy 4 featuring Fraser comes to an end as the film’s director gives an update.

The Mummy Director Gives an Update on The Franchise’s 4th Film Featuring Brendan Fraser

Stephen Sommers, the director of the 1999 film, The Mummy is often considered to be a masterpiece of a film that has survived the test of time. The action-adventure film managed to create a special place in the hearts of its viewers and the casting of Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz was loved by the fans.

With natural chemistry between the main cast, and the ability to crack jokes despite a resurrected mummy trying to kill the protagonist was something that was loved by the fans. Despite having a trilogy, the fans wanted a fourth film, but their wishes were not followed because, in 2017, the franchise received a reboot where The Whale actor was replaced by Tom Cruise.

Now, after 25 years, Stephen Sommers gives fans an update about the possibility of a 4th film, that fans have been asking for ages. While celebrating the silver jubilee of the film, the director shared with The Hollywood Reporter about the possibility of the 4th film and if any studio would be interested in making The Mummy 4.

He said,

“Not that I know. All the people at Universal are new after I left. I don’t really know them, and they haven’t got a hold of me, so I don’t know what’s in their heads. At the same time, it would have to be something really special. Of course, I would work with all of those actors again.”

Even though Sommers has hinted at his interest in creating a fourth film featuring his original cast from the trilogy, Universal Studios have not released any official comments or hinted to their fans that a possible fourth film, featuring their favorite adventurer and the resurrected pharaoh would take place in the near future.

Brendan Fraser is Up For The Mummy 4

Back in January 2023, Fraser was present on Deadline’s The Actor’s Side podcast with Pete Hammond, where he was asked if he would like to return to reprise his iconic role of Rick O’Connell one more time in a 4th film. The actor was excited as he shared that he would not turn down the opportunity to play the role so sign me up. He said,

“Gosh, I don’t know any juicy details about it. But it’s kind of an open-ended question for some time now. I’m not opposed to it. I don’t know an actor that doesn’t want a job. I don’t think I’ve been this famous and unsalaried at the same time in my professional life, so sign me up.”

Moreover, Fraser said on the Entertainment Weekly podcast, that he would be more than happy to return to the franchise to work with the original cast as the role is very dear to his heart.

“Sounds like fun. I’m always looking for a job. If anyone’s got the right conceit. I think I’ve never been as famous, and never been as unsalaried at the moment as I am right now. So spread the word.”

Though everyone is on board to work on the 4th film, it now depends on either Universal Studios or a different studio to revive the fan-favorite franchise.

The Mummy can be streamed on Fubo TV.
