Angelina Jolie had a recurring role as Master Tigress in the Kung Fu Panda franchise. Balancing Jack Black’s goofy Po with her disciplined demeanor, Jolie’s performance as the ambitious and focused Tigress was lauded. She played the role in the first three films of the franchise. However, she did not make a comeback in the recent four-quel.

When asked why Angelina Jolie and Jackie Chan (who voiced Master Monkey) were not returning for Kung Fu Panda 4, director Mike Mitchell mentioned that he wanted Po to not be in the Valley of Peace and with the number of characters in the film, there was less space for the Furious Five. He said in an interview with Hindustan Times,

“The Furious Five do make an appearance in this part. All five of them: Crane, Viper, Monkey, Mantis, and Tiger. But we decided to really evolve our story. We incorporated a whole bunch of new characters. So we’ve got a penguin. We’ve got a granny boar…The list goes on and on. So the movie is so jam-packed with brand-new characters. We wanted to expand our story and get Po out of the Valley of Peace.”

The film also sees many fan-favorite characters from previous franchises appearing in the films such as JK Simmons, Gary Oldman, James Hong, and Dustin Hoffman, while newcomers such as Viola Davis and Awkwafina portray new characters.
