Actress Emma Stone gained wider recognition after starring as Gwen Stacy in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man. Poor Things directed by Yorgos Lanthimos also stars Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, and more. It is based on Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel about a young woman who is resurrected by a scientist after she commits suicide. The young woman after her resurrection embarks on a journey of self-discovery. Upon its release, the movie has been named as one of the top 10 movies of 2023 and the performances of the actors have been acclaimed. But Lily Gladstone’s fans are not happy with Emma Stone’s recent win.
Emma Stone honors her mother while accepting Best Actress at the BAFTA for Poor Things
The 2024 EE BAFTA Film Awards were held on Sunday in London where actress Emma Stone for her exceptional performance as Bella Baxter in Poor Things won the award for Best Actress. The actress who had previously won the award for her work in La La Land, took the opportunity to honor her mother Krista Stone. She said while accepting award,
“I just want to say this in case I don’t ever get a chance to again. I really want to thank my mom because she’s the best person I know in the world and she inspires me every single day and she’s always made me believe this kind of crazy idea that I could do something like this and I’m beyond grateful.”
Stone continued,
“Without her none of this exists, including my life so thanks for that too, mom. Thank you so much.”
The actress had jokingly mentioned that she played a British person in the movie and Neil did not laugh at her when he was teaching her how to pronounce some British words. She added a thank you to England for accepting her.
Emma Stone’s win at the BAFTA upsets Lily Gladstone’s fans hinting at a possible Oscar snub
Lily Gladstone who gained critical acclaim for the portrayal of Mollie Kyle in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon failed to secure a nomination at BAFTA 2024. Fans were baffled by the nominations and not finding Gladstone’s name in them, especially after how incredible she had been in the movie.
Now, Emma Stone winning the Best Actress award at BAFTA for Poor Things has fans wondering if Lily Gladstone’s impressive performance will be recognized at the Academy Awards or just like BAFTA will be ignored. Fans took to their social media to share their concerns regarding the same with a user tweeting, ‘I don’t like where this is going,’ with another adding that Gladstone wasn’t nominated at BAFTA noting that they don’t think that it says much about the Oscar race.
An X user added, ‘Me too bruh, Stone was good, but nowhere near Gladstone. She wasn’t even the second best performance nominated; I’ve already accepted that Flower Moon probably won’t win much. I don’t like this.’ A user went ahead to compare the situation to Michelle Yeoh and Cate Blanchett mentioning that they are hopeful that it plays out the same way as last year, even though they wouldn’t be mad at Stone for Poor Things. (Cate Blanchett for Tar had won the BAFTA 2023 & Michelle Yeoh for Everything Everywhere All at Once had eventually won the 2023 Academy Award)

Another user added that Emma Stone was terrific and probably their favorite performance of the year but added that they are not looking forward to her being the face of Lily Gladstone’s snub though. A fan pointed out that Gladstone wasn’t even nominated and that should be a bad sign for her Oscar chances already.

It should be noted that fans did not try to discredit the brilliant performance of Emma Stone in Poor Things but only meant to showcase their disappointment with Lily Gladstone’s work not being recognized. However, both actresses are nominated for the 2024 Academy Awards under the category of Best Actress in a Leading Role.
