It looks like a fortune worth $200 million and several accolades, including an Oscar, apparently weren’t enough for Gwyneth Paltrow to be renowned as a successful actress. Or at least, that’s what Jennifer Lopez believed.
During her controversial 1998 magazine interview, J.Lo, who at the time had been garnering popularity for her hit songs and her imminent rise as an actress, bashed several Hollywood actresses, including Paltrow, claiming how she’d never heard of the Marvel actress’ name being attached to any significant projects and only knew of her because of her romantic rendezvous with an exceptionally famous actor.
Jennifer Lopez Threw Brutal Shade at Gwyneth Paltrow
In her infamous 1998 interview with Movieline magazine, Jennifer Lopez dished out a horde of harsh comments for several famous actresses, including Stranger Things star Winona Ryder, the ‘Queen of Pop’ Madonna, and Romeo + Juliet star Claire Danes. Unfortunately enough, Paltrow too had been on the receiving end of Lopez’s stinging criticism that day.
“Tell me what she’s been in? I swear to God, I don’t remember anything she was in.”
A businesswoman and actress, Paltrow, 50, at the time, had been climbing the ladder of stardom after starring in numerous critically acclaimed films like Emma (1996), Andrew Davis’ A Perfect Murder (1998), and Joseph Fiennes-led Shakespeare in Love for which she also bagged an Academy Award for best actress, to list a few. But that certainly didn’t stop J.Lo from slamming the Goop founder for being devoid of an individual identity of her own and being “hot by association.”
The 53-year-old singer even went so far as to claim that she’d only ever heard of Paltrow about Academy Award-winning actor and film producer, Brad Pitt, implying that the Iron Man actress only leaped to fame courtesy of her association with a Hollywood hotshot like Pitt.
“Some people get hot by association. I heard more about her and Brad Pitt than I ever heard about her work.”
The Shotgun Wedding actress was referring to Paltrow and Pitt’s romantic relationship which started in 1994 and bloomed into a brief engagement of about 6 months before dissolving into oblivion. But regardless of that, Lopez probably shouldn’t have taken such shots at a fellow actress for no good reason, least of all someone like the Sliding Doors star who’d already been ten steps ahead of J.Lo in Hollywood back then.
A Look into Gwyneth Paltrow And Brad Pitt’s Romance
It’s been more than two decades since the couple parted their ways back in 1997, but that doesn’t change the fact that they used to be one of Hollywood’s iconic ’90s couples that thrived together, albeit for a short time.
The Fight Club star first crossed paths with Gwyneth Paltrow in 1994 on the set of David Fincher’s Seven, shortly after which they started dating. Two years into their relationship, Pitt went down on one knee and proposed to the “love of his life” in December 1996, in Argentina. But the pair’s dreamy engagement was short-lived because just after getting matching haircuts and an amorous getaway to Paris came the end of their romance.
The Great Expectations actress’ split with Pitt in June 1997 had been a shock to fans when an insider source revealed that the couple had decided to call it quits due to “real problems” that were wholly “between the two of them.”
Paltrow, at present, is married to television writer and producer, Brad Falchuk who she’s been with for almost 8 years now. Pitt is currently dating a social media influencer and fitness enthusiast Ines de Ramon and the two have been going out for a few months.
