Denis Villeneuve has proven that he is truly one of the best filmmakers of today’s time. The visionary has made several awe-inspiring and incredible movies, with Dune: Part Two being the crown jewel in his already exceptional filmography. His latest science fiction flick seems to be on the path to grand success.
Fans are desperate for the third part. And recently the CEO of Legendary Entertainment expressed that Dune: Part Three will happen when two conditions are met.
Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three Will Happen Under Two Conditions
Dune: Part Two landed the biggest domestic opening of 2024 and has grossed about $182.5 million worldwide during its opening weekend. Already surpassing the box office debut of other movies released this year, the science fiction flick seems to be on its way to eventually redeem its $190 million production cost and $100 million promotional budget (via Variety).
The movie has accumulated positive and extraordinary critical and audience reviews, further solidifying it as the next-big-potential sci-fi franchise. Based on the books by Frank Herbert, part two was instrumental in providing a finality to the first movie, but has still left open several plotholes to explore.
And so while we await the news of the third part, Legendary Entertainment CEO, Josh Grode addressed to CNBC that a Dune 3 might be made and revealed the two conditions necessary for the threequel,
“We have to have all creative stakeholders aligned and support the vision… I think everybody is very excited and really enjoying this moment and if Denis [Villeneuve] gets the script right and he feels that he can deliver another experience on par with what we’ve just completed then I don’t see why not.”
While Dune: Part Three or Dune Messiah might happen, as to when it will take place remains to be seen for Denis Villeneuve stated that he might take some break before he returns to that world.
Denis Villeneuve On Dune: Part Three
It is Denis Villeneuve‘s legendary vision that has made the Dune movies as successful and as revered as they are now. And fans certainly want him to come back for the third movie, which will be based on Herbert’s third novel, Dune: Messiah.
The esteemed director added that he would like to take a little break instead of jumping right into the third movie, something he had done with the sequel.
“For my mental sanity I might do something in between, but my dream would be to go a last time on this planet that I love.”
While he stated that a third Dune movie will be his last in the franchise (via Time), the director has over four other projects lined up (via The Hollywood Reporter) so his return to the threequel might potentially take up to 2 to 3 years.
Meanwhile, Dune: Part Two is in theatres now.
