Scarlett Johansson has cemented herself among the most influential Hollywood celebrities thanks to her impeccable acting skills. She entered the entertainment industry at a young age and transitioned to adult roles, earning critical acclaim for her work. Along the way, her prominence also started reflecting on her personal life as her off-the-screen life garnered public attention.
While one may be aware of her high-profile marriage with ex-husband Ryan Reynolds, it might be surprising to learn her candid take on the institution of marriage, shared long before meeting him.
Scarlett Johansson Got Candid About Marriage
Like many Hollywood celebrities, Scarlett Johansson has enjoyed love at quite a young age, which was great, even for a short while. Her love chapter with Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds is quite similar.
But before their bond blossomed, the Black Widow actress expressed her candid thoughts on the institution of marriage or rather feeling otherwise about the monogamy concept.
While promoting her 2005 movie, Match Point via Today, she told reporters, “I don’t think human beings are monogamous creatures by nature.”
Although, she was open to the idea of settling with a partner as she added,
When I decide I want to have children with somebody I think it would be nice to be married to that person.
Her early thoughts on marriage became a reality when she married Ryan Reynolds in 2008 but they eventually separated in 2011. While their relationship remained mostly low-key, both moved on with their lives. The actress later married Romain Dauriac (2014-2017) and, since 2020, has been married to Colin Jost.
Although the reasons for her and Reynolds’ separation were never publicly addressed, she has often shared her evolving thoughts on relationships in the years since.
Scarlett Johansson Reflected on Her Marriage With Ryan Reynolds
The Prestige actress was just 23 when she tied the knot with her ex-husband, who was 31 then. Both the actors were on different career trajectories at the time which somehow took a toll on their relationship. The actress herself addressed the possibility of a “competition thing” that ended their nearly three-year relationship via E! News.
However, she only has positive words about her past bond with Reynolds. She told Cosmopolitan magazine via E! News that her bond with The Proposal actor “seemed like a very romantic thing to do, and it was. It was the best thing that I ever did.”
She further reflected on what went wrong in their relationship, stating,
Relationships are complicated…and being married is a living, breathing process. I think I was not fully aware of the peaks and the valleys. I wasn’t prepared to hunker down and do the work.
She also mentioned that their hectic schedules contributed to their separation, as spending so much time apart made it difficult to keep their bond going.
She is a big believer in instinct, so she felt “getting married was the right thing to do because it was natural.“ While addressing that they grew out of love, she called herself “fortunate“ to have “married somebody who turned out to be the person I thought he would be.”
It’s great that the actress takes a positive approach to her past relationships, which helped her realize what she wanted from her bonds, which eventually led her to have a happy married life with her partner, Jost.
