In 2013, when all the cameras were following her on the way to the main stage, she tripped and hit the floor, becoming the butt of many jokes after the incident. A year later, she tripped over a cone at the start of the red carpet. As expected, jokes at her expense arrived in a timely manner, only this time they were accompanied by a few suggestions of the fall being a part of some act.

How Jennifer Lawrence Reacted After Losing Oscar to Brie Larson in 2016

Jennifer Lawrence‘s first fall at the Academy Awards was followed by her being handed the Oscar award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for her brilliant performance in Silver Linings Playbook. The romantic drama about the complicated dynamic between Pat (Bradley Cooper) and Tiffany (Lawrence) also featured Robert De Niro.

The trio combined again to great effect in the movie Joy in 2015. Lawrence portrayed the titular character, who rises against all odds and sets up a business empire. This led to her fourth nomination at the Oscars, but Brie Larson pipped her to the Best Actress award. She won the honor for her absorbing performance as ‘Ma’ in the drama thriller, Room.

When talking about the subject of being competitive on The Howard Stern Show, the No Hard Feelings star insisted she’s always looking to win these awards, but made sure to underline that Larson deserved to win the award in 2016. “I don’t think I should have won for Joy, I think Brie and Alicia [Vikander] should have won that year,” she said.

On the topic of that infamous fall in 2013, Lawrence revealed it startled her and messed up her speech, which made her upset as it was a big moment for her.

How Winning the Oscar Award in 2016 Strengthened Brie Larson

In the case of Lawrence, the Academy Awards night will always be associated with her brilliant work as well as her falls. For Larson, it seemingly gave her a stronger voice against sexism, which she faced along the way.

In a backstage press room following her first Academy Award win Larson said (via Insider):

“There were many times that I would go into auditions and the casting directors would say, ‘It’s really great, we love what you’re doing but we’d really love for you to come back in a jean miniskirt and high heels. There’s no reason for me to show up in a jean miniskirt and high heels other than the fact that you want to create this fantasy, that you can reject. I personally always rejected that moment, I tried maybe once and it always made me feel terrible.”

The triumph also underlined her incredible acting prowess, which led to both high-profile and female-centric projects, including Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel.
