After stunning the world with a majestic performance in 2019’s standalone film Joker, Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix is back to creating more shades to the iconic DC character in the upcoming Joker: Folie à Deux. This time he will be joined by another powerhouse of a performer Lady Gaga, who will portray the role of Harley Quinn.
Along with the hype that Joker: Folie à Deux has already created with Phoenix and Lady Gaga’s partnership, the film has also come under some criticism for its supposed genre. One of the film’s stars and Emmy winning actor spoke about these speculations and her steadfast faith in the film.
Is Joker: Folie à Deux A Musical? Zazie Beetz Spills The Beans
After 2019’s critically acclaimed Joker, the expectations from audiences for Joker: Folie à Deux is extremely high. With Grammy winning singing superstar Lady Gaga also on board as Harley Quinn, audiences are expecting nothing short of an intense dramatic blockbuster. But the film has recently received some backlash from viewers after there was speculation about it being a musical. Many fans took to social media to express their displeasure at the incongruity of incorporating music into a theme of this nature despite the presence of Lady Gaga who is a singer.
German-American actor Zazie Beetz who is reprising her role as a struggling single mother who lives in the same apartment as Arthur Fleck aka Joker, addressed these rumors and assured viewers about the authenticity of the film which will have musical tones. Speaking at the Tribeca Film Festival Artists Dinner in New York, the actor said,
“I think people will be surprised. I don’t think it’s going to be what they expect, around it being musical. We all sort of express musically and dancing in our lives day-to-day. I think it’s going to work really well.”
Todd Phillips returns to the director’s chair for the Joker sequel which is rumored to take place prominently in Arkham Asylum. Zazie Beetz’s character is also expected to have a important arc in the film.
Zazie Beetz Is Lady Gaga’s Fangirl
Joker actor Zazie Beetz is all set to reprise her role as Sophie Dumond in the sequel Joker: Folie à Deux. The actor spoke about the significance of her character in the life of Arthur Fleck aka Joker and expressed her excitement to revisit the role for the film. The star also openly gushed about her new co-actor Lady Gaga and her easy rapport with the Poker Face singer.
“She’s super warm and kind. I felt very welcome with her on set. She was doing her own character work and stuff, but she’s a very grounded person. She’s just Stefani.”
Beetz went on to add that fans will have a lot of clarity about all the speculations and theories surrounding the film once it is out on the big screen.
Warner Bros is set to release Joker: Folie à Deux in theaters Oct. 4, 2024.
