While the rest of MCU is busy cooking up the multiverse narrative moving forward, Taika Waititi is taking notes from his last Marvel entry’s disappointment to bring something fresh to the table. Although Chris Hemsworth’s Thor 5′s future amidst the current slate of Phase 5 and Phase 6 entries remains under wraps, this hasn’t stopped Waititi from working on ideas for his next villain.

Identifying his mistakes from Thor: Love and Thunder‘s failure, the director expressed his intentions of making the next villain in the franchise more formidable than Odinson’s older sister.

Taika Waititi Is Aiming to Bring a More Powerful Villain Than Hela in a Possible Thor 5

Although Taika Waititi has dealt with extreme backlash following his work in Thor: Love and Thunder, he was also responsible for crafting one of the best pre-Infinity War films, Thor: Ragnarok. From reinventing Thor as a more engrossing protagonist, who is accompanied by a great set of characters, the tonal shift from the previous entries in the franchise helped it become the best Thor movie. And apart from making Chris Hemsworth’s Thor a broken guy that fans can root for, he also didn’t fail in delivering the greatest MCU villain before Thanos entered the chat, Hela.

And considering The Suicide Squad actor failed to deliver on that scale in the sequel to Ragnarok, Waititi is ready to go back to his roots if a 5th entry in the franchise is ever greenlit. Expressing his ideas for a possible Thor 5, Taika Waititi aims towards bringing a more stronger and formidable foe than Cate Blanchett’s Hela.

“What is left to do to him? It’s got to be something that feels like it’s carrying on with the evolution of the character, but still in a very fun way and still giving him things to come up against that feel like they’re building on the obstacles that he has to overcome. I don’t think we can have a villain that’s weaker than Hela. I feel like we need to step up from there and add a villain that’s somehow more formidable.”

Even though it can’t be said whether the 5th movie can undo some of Thor: Love and Thunder‘s mishaps and be more in line with the film that preceded it, the future of it remains uncertain for now.

Chris Hemsworth will return for a Thor 5 under this condition

The future of Thor 5 mostly lands on the shoulder of Chris Hemsworth. Following Hemsworth’s recent health concerns and his want to move on to new things as an actor has plummeted fans’ expectations for another standalone Thor with him at the center. However, the Extraction Star did clarify about being open to any fresh ideas, claiming he wants to explore a new side of the character in order to justify its presence moving forward.

“If there’s something that we believe is exciting and fun, then great. I’ve loved being able to reinvent that character a few times.”

Fans will hope the duo of Taika Waititi and Chris Hemsworth can once again reunite to bring something fresh to the Marvel universe like Ragnarok did back in 2017.
