They first collaborated in 1973, and since then Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese have been unstoppable. A partnership that has lasted several decades and continues to contribute towards the evolution and enrichment of cinematic storytelling. Their combined efforts have not only created timeless classics but have left an indelible mark on the film industry.

Their collaboration has also created an iconic friendship that not only makes them collaborate often but also offers each other parts in their respective ventures. However, despite it all De Niro once turned down Scorsese’s only Oscar-winning movie, The Departed.

Talking about their collaboration and relationship, Scorsese recently stated in an interview with Deadline,

“We always checked in, on that and everything else. He wanted me to do Analyze This, and I said, ‘We already did it. It was Goodfellas.’ I talked to him about other projects, and at one point he said, ‘You know the kind of stuff I like to do with you.’ I said, ‘OK.’ That became The Irishman, and it took nine years. We were always looking. ‘What about The Departed?’ ‘Nah, I don’t wanna do that.’ ‘OK.’”

And so, while we missed out on a Scorsese-De Niro collaboration then, they are back again for the tenth time.

Killers of the Flower Moon will mark Scorsese and De Niro’s tenth collaboration. It would also be Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio‘s sixth collaboration and the second collaboration for the three. Having all the markings of a Western classic, the movie is based on David Grann’s book of the same name.

A gripping tale, the movie is much more personal than it seems. It is also a movie that the three ended up developing together and re-editing the script again and again until it started to make sense. Now a tragic story exploring human nature, greed, and weakness, it explores how greed paves the way for evil things

One of the most anticipated movies of the year, it will be released on October 20, 2023. The Departed can be streamed on Netflix.
