Hiromu Arakawa’s work, Fullmetal Alchemist, has become prominent in anime and manga. In an interview with Comic Natalie, she was asked to talk about the entire ordeal regarding her work getting adapted to live action. The interviewer asked her, “First of all, could you tell us your honest thoughts when it was decided that it would be made into a live-action movie? At the end of Volume 15 of Fullmetal Alchemist, released in 2006, it was written that the assistants were discussing What if it was made into a live-action movie?”

“When I heard it would be made into a live-action movie, my first reaction was “Oh!” (laughs). It reminded me of when everyone was chatting noisily, which was depicted at the end of Volume 15. Until now, it has been made into an anime and a game, but when I heard that it would be made in a different medium, as the original author, I felt a wave of excitement, thinking, “I’ll be able to see something new again.” I was looking forward to the day of completion.”

She replied to Comic Natalie, starting with her reaction to the news of Fullmetal Alchemist being made into a live-action movie. She talked about how a movie adaptation was utterly different from getting adapted into a game or anime.

“Lan Fan was especially cool! Yamada-kun, who played Ed, became a very attractive protagonist with a richer range of emotions in his acting. Also, Tsubasa- chan’s crying performance made me also cry. But the part that made me cry the most was the scene of Fu-jiisan. I thought, “Oh, that’s what looks like in live-action.” I drew this story myself, but combined with the amazing advances in computer graphics, I was able to enjoy the film with a fresh feeling from beginning to end.”

Arakawa elaborated on how excited she was just from witnessing the first scene of the movie. She also praised the cast of the movie. She greatly appreciated the diverse range of emotions shown by Tsubasa Honda, who played Winry Rockbell, and the fighting of the actors playing Edward Elric and the Xing team.
