It was a memorable moment when Alexander Skarsgård (often seen as a symbol of masculinity) wished to wear women’s clothing at a movie premiere. The actor walked the red carpet at the Diary of a Teenage Girl premiere in 2015, wearing a sparkly gold dress, a blonde wig, and a full face of makeup.
When the Legend of Tarzan actor sat down with Conan O’Brien, he finally revealed why he chose that particular look for the premiere.
Why Alexander Skarsgård Wanted to Dress in Drag at a Premiere?
When Conon O’Brien asked the actor on TBS what was his stunning look about, before saying anything, Skarsgård laughed hard and told O’Brian:
“The first Ad on that movie is Cousin Wonderlette, a legendary drag queen in San Francisco. She was hosting [the premiere] with all her drag queen friends, and there was just something about the excitement about getting ready for the premiere as I was sitting there with my gray suit. They were talking about their wigs and their dresses and everything and I felt left out. So I asked Cousin, ‘Can I play? Can I be a part of this? and she said yes.”
That’s how Wonderlette gladly helped him achieve his desired look, which was totally inspired by a vintage photo of Farrah Fawcett. Although his bold red carpet appearance wasn’t his only fashion risk.
Alexander Skarsgård Walked at the MTV Movie Awards Without Wearing Any Pants
In 2016, Alexander Skarsgård made a bold move by appearing on stage at the MTV Movie Awards without wearing pants. The Swedish actor’s daring choice to go without pants on the MTV red carpet resulted in a half-dressed photograph, which is now the main profile picture on his IMDb page.
In a Q&A video with IMDb, when he was asked to explain his reasons behind his choice to go without pants, he said:
“The year before, Zac Efron had taken his shirt off on stage and he is so sexy. I decided to also show a little bit of skin. I couldn’t take my shirt off because Zac had already done that, so I thought, well, then I’ll take my pants off because it’s equally sexy.”
Due to this choice, when Skarsgård stood up to present an award with his Legend of Tarzan co-star Samuel L. Jackson, he gave the audience quite the eyeful.
