Relationships are hard to manage even after they end. And when we think of celebrity breakups, this becomes even worse. One such complicated relationship was between Jenny Slate and Chris Evans.
Even though we all know how that alleged love story ended after a brief period, it is still important to know how it all began. Did you know that the actress-comedian was still married to her former husband (Dean Fleischer Camp) at the time when rumors of her relationship with Evans first surfaced?
Following their chance encounters during the audition process, Slate and Evans first spoke in person on the Gifted set. That was where their relationship reportedly began to take off.

Jenny Slate Was Still Married While Dating Chris Evans?
Chris Evans (aka Captain America) and Jenny Slate (an actress, comedian, and author) first got to know each other in 2015. Despite dating for only a little over a year, their unusual relationship garnered media attention. What specifically drew the funny woman to PEOPLE’s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ (2022)?
They were a prime example of how opposites attract. Slate was eccentric and admitted to being a weirdo, whereas Evans was the stereotypical cool guy. However, it somehow worked out.
The two allegedly ran into each other in 2015 while doing a chemistry read for the movie Gifted, according to Vulture. At that time, Slate was already married to Dean Fleischer-Camp, a film director, for four years.
According to Entertainment Tonight, the two actors had an on-again, off-again relationship for about a year that made them feel like giddy middle school teenagers. The Obvious Child actress shared:
“It’s kind of like I got my dream 7th-grade boyfriend.”

Jenny Slates Was Over Love After Her Split From Chris Evans
The relationship between Chris Evans and Jenny Slate was a whirlwind, with many highs and lows. Their first breakup happened in 2017.
When Slate and the Captain America: The First Avenger actor tried to restart their relationship, they quickly became more than friends and eventually split up again by March 2018, according to Us Weekly. The actress was dejected about dating again after her relationship with Evans was formally over.
The actress, 41, admitted to Elle that she did not want to pursue love endlessly, adding:
“The way we are told to search for love is fairly inhumane and unworkable… Unfortunately, you don’t get to choose when it’s over, unless you truly are shutting down.”
She could not believe it when Evans soon revealed that he had feelings for his co-star, as she said to Vulture:
“Eventually, when it was like, Oh, you have these feelings for me? I was looking around like, Is this a prank?” But it wasn’t a prank, and the two ended up dating for nearly one year.”
Fortunately, Slate did not give up on love completely because not long after her breakup with Evans, the comedian discovered the love of her life. In 2021, Slate and Ben Shattuck tied the knot after first dating. Although she had been in a number of loving partnerships, including the one with Evans, none had ever surpassed her love for her husband, as she noted:
“He [Ben Shattuck] brings the best out of me. That best isn’t my most s*xually viable or whatever, but more like, wow, I am interested in the thing that was created between us and I wouldn’t say it to anyone but him, and I never have before.”
As a result, Slate eventually met her soul mate, despite the heartbreak along the way. Following three failed attempts at getting married due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Shattuck and Slate finally tied the knot in their living room on New Year’s Eve in 2021.
