Winslet explained that she became a global name at the young age of 22 after the record-breaking success of James Cameron’s film. During a conversation on the WTF podcast, she spoke about the impact of her breakout role on her personal life. She said,

“I went into self-protective mode right away (after Titanic came out),” Winslet said, adding: “It was like night and day from one day to the next. I was subject to a lot of personal physical scrutiny, I was criticized a lot and the British press were quite unkind to me.”

“I felt bullied if I’m honest. I remember thinking, ‘This is horrible and I hope it passes’ — it did definitely pass but it made me realize that, if that’s what being famous was, I was not ready to be famous, definitely not.”

Hence, the actress decided to first polish her skills and then take up big projects. Winslet added,

“I did strategically try and find smaller things, just so I could understand the craft a bit better and understand myself a bit better, and maintain some degree of privacy and dignity.”

Winslet’s other prominent projects include Revolutionary Road, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Holiday, The Dressmaker, and others. She also did the voiceover for Ronal in Avatar: The Way of Water.
