During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the Deadpool actor and the Mythic Quest co-star, Rob McElhenney talked about their bonding including the time when the duo purchased an entire soccer team.

Ryan Reynolds recalled that the duo’s friendship kicked off after he slid into the latter’s DMs to let him know how he enjoyed his work in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

He revealed,

“I kind of slid into your DMs,” Reynolds said. “As I’m getting older, I’m thinking, ‘I’ve gotta tell people when I appreciate them more.’ “

However, his mere appreciation turned into a wholesome deal of purchasing the legendary Wrexham AFC soccer team of Wales after McElhenney suggested the idea.

“I remember after you reached out about this absolutely insane idea. I remember seeing Blake and saying, ‘I have bad news, and I have really bad news.”

Reynolds went ahead with his Welcome to Wrexham co-star’s idea and made the team his own. He recalled how he broke that news to his wife, Blake Lively about the same.

“The bad news is I slipped into someone’s DMs again. The really bad news is that I might have bought half of a fifth-tier national football league in Wales.'”

While the purchase was something he did not consult with his wife at the time, he confirmed that her reaction was not good.

However, Lively eventually came on board with her husband. In an interview with the Entertainment Tonight, he recalled,

“I promise I consult my wife before putting pants on. She’s actually more obsessed with Wrexham than I am.”

He continued,

“We were laying in bed after the Wembley match and she’s like, ‘I’m now as obsessed, if not more than you are with this club and this community and this town and everything it represents and where it can go.’ She’s as obsessed as I am, she’s already looking at the schedule throughout the year wondering which matches she can attend, so it’s pretty great.”

Purchasing the club was certainly a marvelous decision that reached new heights after the duo’s involvement. The club is the oldest in Wales and the third-oldest professional association football team in the world.
