Set against the backdrop of WWII, with Kaiju as an instrument of social commentary, Godzilla Minus One has been widely, unequivocally hailed as the best Kaiju tale ever made. The Japanese epic is a creation of Takashi Yamazaki, who donned many hats for the film including the screenwriting, direction, and visual effects.
While the whole wide world (at least those who have seen the movie) has been praising the kaiju tale, Steven Spielberg too has joined in, praising the epic for its brilliant direction. Yamazaki can’t contain his happiness and gratitude after meeting the God of filmmaking.
Steven Spielberg Joins In On Praise For The Critically Acclaimed Godzilla Minus One
Boasting an impressive 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 81 scores on Metacritic, the Japanese science fiction monster tale, Godzilla Minus One is a certified hit. The 37th film in Japan’s long-running Godzilla franchise, critics and audiences have been hailing it not only as the best film in the franchise but also as better than Hollywood’s Monsterverse.
Written, directed, and animated by Takashi Yamazaki, the $15 million (via Vulture) period film not only retells a fresh tale of the popular kaiju but also offers some thought-provoking and intense social commentary (see The Hollywood Reporter). With WWII as its backdrop, Godzilla Minus One is a whole package deal in one, an epic monster tale, an intense social commentary feature, and a story of survival, hope, and love.
After learning critical praise from all over the world, even the acclaimed filmmaker, Steven Spielberg has joined it. Previously calling the film the pinnacle of filmmaking (via Discussing Film), the director recently met Yamazaki at the 2024 Oscar Nominees Luncheon (see ET Online). Afterward, Yamazaki himself posted a photo of them on his X account, and shared the details of their meeting, referring to Spielberg as God.
Steven Spielberg Watched Godzilla Minus One Three Times
It won’t be wrong to label Steven Spielberg as the God of filmmaking. After directing and helming several critically acclaimed movies, Spielberg rightly deserves the title. And so when Takashi Yamazaki met the Jaws director at the Oscars Luncheon, the director posted a picture of them on X and captioned it (translated),
“I met God. What should I do now? Cry? Moreover, he has seen Godzilla three times. He said he liked the character. He also happily received a Godzilla figure..”
To earn such high praise for Spielberg must have meant a lot for Yamazaki especially since the filmmaker was heavily inspired by Spielberg’s Jaws (via IGN). After the images of their interaction went viral on social media (via X), fans were overjoyed and expressed that if Spielberg loved the movie, it is definitely worth watching!
As of now, the streaming details for Godzilla Minus One haven’t been revealed yet.
