Eiichiro Oda reveals his secret behind designing an engaging anime

Among all the animes, One Piece is one of the most recognized and popular shows in the community. Oda’s brilliant narrative has captivated fans for over two decades and only continues his legacy through manga and anime. Not to forget that One Piece was the best-selling manga series for eleven consecutive years from 2008 until 2018.

Despite all notable achievements, Eiichiro Oda‘s work is often accused of its long list of episodes which could lead the audience to boredom. However, one can argue that the mangaka was showcasing each Straw Hat member’s characteristics and ambitions before joining Luff’s crew. This helps viewers to develop a deeper connection with the rest of the characters apart from the beloved protagonist, Luffy.

Regardless, keeping the audience captivated for over 1000 episodes isn’t an easy task for any creator and it only highlights why Oda ranks among the Top 10 Geniuses of the current era. However, creating such a vast engaging world filled with themes of morality and liberation comes with its own set of challenges.

Back in 2012, Oda opened up about his side of the story while designing and working on One Piece.

To this day, I’ve never truly felt pressure about becoming successful. I always try to stay focused on making manga for just a single audience, because in most circumstances, you read manga by yourself.

As the mangaka sticks close to his roots from the beginning of the manga’s development, he reveals that his passion wasn’t ever driven by the lust for success. He further adds that the secret behind the series’ success is that he narrates his story from the perspective of his younger self.

So whenever I draw manga, I have only one reader in my mind—myself as a 15-year-old. I have no idea how other people would feel, so I turn back to the 15-year-old me to make a judgment on what is awesome or not. I always try to stay true to myself, and somehow it resonates with the kids who read my manga.

Oda points out that trusting his judgment has only led to captivating several viewers towards the franchise. As the series nears its climatic conclusion, One Piece remains a standout in the “Big 3” solidifying its legacy in the anime world.
