Every Breaking Bad fan must be craving another spinoff from the franchise, but creator Vince Gilligan is very much done with it. He admitted that there is no chance he would once again venture into the same world and squeeze out whatever story he could get just for the dime.
Breaking Bad has had its own spinoffs – Better Call Saul and El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie – and both were massive victories. Perhaps this was the reason why a lot of people are suggesting to make more sequels, an idea that Gilligan immediately turned down.
Vince Gilligan Does Not Want To Make Another Breaking Bad Spinoff
Speaking with Variety, Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan expressed disinterest in a project where RJ Mitte’s character, Walt Jr., will take the lead. He is the son of Bryan Cranston’s character and has been a staple in the show from the beginning.
“That’s probably the kind of thing somebody will pitch 10 or 15 years from now — Walter Jr. as an Albuquerque crime lord succeeding where his father failed. I could pretty much guarantee right now that I have no interest in seeing that happen.”
He said that reminiscing about the show and the characters was fun, but it does not mean that he would actually let nostalgia dictate his reason and actually helm another spinoff based on the series. Still, he keeps the door ajar for possibilities.
“That’d be a sad tribute to the show. It’s fun thinking about what would happen to the characters, but it doesn’t rise to the level of, ‘Gee, I’d like to tell more about the story.’ But who knows, in a few years maybe.”
During his conversation with The Wrap, Mitte shared his own version of what he would want for his character, and it sounds pretty interesting.
“Walt escapes capture, Jesse came back to Walt after the whole shoot-out, Walt and Jesse disappear for five years, and Walt Jr. is still living with his sister, almost in like DEA housing. Then Walt Jr. pretty much joins the DEA and is hunting after his father. He kind of takes Hank’s role where Hank left off. My idea is that he’s trying to go out, find what happened to Hank, and go after Jesse and Walt.”
With Gilligan confirming he is done with Breaking Bad, it’s hard to imagine Mitte’s proposal would come true. But, still, he also said that if his new project flops, he might come back.
Giancarlo Esposito Demands A Solo Breaking Bad Spinoff
Meanwhile, Giancarlo Esposito, who played Gus Fring in Breaking Bad and the prequel series Better Call Saul, wants to have his own solo spinoff. He remarked via Variety that this would be an exploration of the drug kingpin’s dark past.
“I think eventually there should be, and there might be. I have a lot of premises I like to push. If I was talking to Vince Gilligan right now, I would tell him, ‘The Rise of Gus.’ ”
The actor understands that Gilligan is very busy with his new project with Apple, though he hopes that he will find time to come back to the franchise because The Rise of Gus could end up becoming an interesting series.
