The creator of Tokyo Ghoul, Sui Ishida, was interviewed for Manga Passion Germany. Ishida said several things throughout the interview, but what shocked fans the most was that he didn’t perceive his massively popular anime series as successful. Regardless of the commercial and critical milestones, Ishida expressed that, “I don’t really consider Tokyo Ghoul a success.” Ishida further explained the reason for his opinion and claimed his perception of success differs. The Mangaka defined that he judges his work on a more personal aspect rather than commercial or popularity.

What did Sui Ishida say about Tokyo Ghoul’s success in the interview?
When asked about his manga’s success, Ishida took a brief moment before replying to Manga Passion Germany,
“For me, success is when I feel like I’ve drawn something well. When I think about it, I don’t actually ask that it be well received in society or that many people like it. So success for me is whether I can praise myself for it or not.”
The mangaka also opened up to Manga Passion Germany about his challenges regarding maintaining his relationship with the readers and connecting with them,
“I think it’s rather difficult for me to engage with my readership. To be honest, I have no precise idea what kind of people like to read my manga, I feel like if I think about it too much I try to be more and more just responsive to the readership and that affects my drawings and makes them weird.”
“The only thing I can do is face my own obstacles, and I think that’s the biggest pressure I’m under, hasn’t really gotten over that pressure yet.”
“So when I draw manga, whether it’s Tokyo Ghoul or Choujin X, I face the same hurdles and pressures. If people like what I draw after overcoming my hurdles, I’m happy. I think that’s the first time I can connect with the readers.”
He explained to Manga Passion Germany about his struggles and how facing those hurdles in his journey was his only option. As long as people were satisfied with his drawing, he would be happy since it helped him connect with them.

Ishida was struggling to connect with his audience. He expressed being lost whether fans liked his work and told Manga Passion Germany, “I have no precise idea what kind of people like to read my manga.”
He also said how overthinking about that issue reflects on his art style, and his illustrations become “weird.”
Even though Ishida sensei might not consider his work a success, Tokyo Ghoul has a massive fan base and has sold millions of copies globally. Studio Pierrot, known for animating titles like Naruto, Black Clover, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Bleach, adapted the Tokyo Ghoul anime.
