Taylor Sheridan has gained recognition for creating the popular Yellowstone series, which has made headlines for several reasons. While fans await the second half of the final season, the show creator recently revealed about writing an infamous scene featuring the patriarch of the Yellowstone empire, John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner).
After its debut in 2018, the series gained a devoted fan following due to its intriguing yet complex storyline among other factors. The series revolves around the conflicts surrounding the Dutton family, owners of the largest ranch in Montana, titled the Yellowstone. Given that the show is a blend of both Western and traditional themes, it featured an infamous scene that Sheridan wrote to annihilate the vegans.
What is Yellowstone‘s Infamous ‘Vegan Protest’ Scene All About?
The infamous Yellowstone scene in question occurs in episode 5 of Season 4. The scene featured a protest by a group of vegans in ranch country in Montana. Kevin Costner’s John Dutton chimed in the scene to offer grounded remarks on what happens to animals when grains and vegetables are harvested.
He explained that one has to sacrifice a lot of lives to become a vegan. Explaining his point, he spoke in the scene via Clarque Shadows
“You ever plow a field? To plant quinoa or sorghum or whatever the hell it is you eat? You kill everything on the ground and under it. You kill every snake, every frog, every mouse, mole, vole, worm, quail…you kill them all.”
He continued,
“So I guess the only real question is: how cute does an animal have to be before you care if it dies to feed you?”
The infamous scene ended in silence as the protestors did not comment on the same. That scene surely left a huge impact on the audience but Sheridan wanted the show’s audience to understand the severity of the same.
Taylor Sheridan Has His Reasons to Write the Infamous Vegan Protest Scene
The Sons of Anarchy star, in an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, shared his views on veganism. Taylor Sheridan admitted that he added the wrote the infamous vegan protest scene as he wanted people to understand and take ownership of the same.
He stated,
“I think one of the most absurd positions anyone can take is they’re a vegan for an ethical reason. It’s preposterous. You could do it for a medical reason…maybe you can’t process meat, you can’t process proteins like that. But to do it from an ethical reason is absurd. And the reason I say that is I have plowed a field. It is carnage. It is 12 feet of carnage. And every single plant that you eat is going to be tilled into the ground in some capacity.”
He further added,
“So you’re going to kill everything…That’s why I wrote it (referring to the infamous sequence). People have to understand. You have to take ownership.”
He suggested that every living thing in the ecosystem is surviving at the expense of another organism, thus thinking that veganism would save the environment might not be the best option. Meanwhile, the show is set to return for the second half of the final season in the latter half of 2024.
