Jake Gyllenhaal changed his casual approach after becoming a producer

Actor Jake Gyllenhaal shared about his film Stronger in a Variety talk show with Margot Robbie, named Actors on Actors. On being asked if he wanted to produce the film from the beginning or just act in it, he shared,

“We’re pretty ambitious, and we have a lot of different projects in development, but this was one that I had read very early on. I had read a very early draft, before any filmmaker was on it, and thought this character is incredible. I was laughing three or four pages into it, and I was surprised by that because I thought this was going to be a different kind of character.”

“I called Erik Feig at Lionsgate and said, ‘I love this role,’ just as an actor at that point. They said, ‘Let’s find a filmmaker first and we’ll come back to you.’”

Prisoners star shared that Lionsgate picked the project and wanted to cast Gyllenhaal, but financing started to slip. It was clashing with Patriots Day. Gyllenhaal knew it was a good story, hence he decided to show the script to the company that funds his company. He and the company decided to provide the finance for the incredible film. After turning producer for the film, the actor understood the hassles of the job.

“So it was like, I had initially just come on as an actor and then by bringing a financing then start producing and now I haven’t slept for two years.”

Stronger follows the story of Jeff Bauman, who lost his legs in the Boston Marathon bombings and had to adjust to his new life. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Bauman, alongside Tatiana Maslany, Miranda Richardson, John Pollono, and Clancy Brown.

“It’s so rewarding, I’m sure you find as well, but it’s also so hard and I never really gave producers the credit that they probably deserve.”

Gyllenhaal agreed with her,

“I don’t think that producers get the credit that they deserve unless they’re up there at an award show getting an award.”

Robbie shared that people think that the producers show up for a couple of days for the shoot, and have an easy job. However, they have usually spent years on the project. The Day After Tomorrow star also shared about being judged for taking up producing along with being an actor. He said,

“Which is why I understand people going like, ‘Why are you actors trying to get into this space?’ But, my mother produced films that she wrote. So I saw the consistent failure that is producing, more than any job on a film set or in pre-production or post or anything. Just constant failure and then all of a sudden, you seem maybe you’re halfway up the mountain.”

Stronger grossed only $8.5 million against its $30 million budget. It is available for streaming on Netflix and Fubo.
