Coulson met his end in The Avengers, but the character was surprisingly resurrected in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, giving fans hope that he could somehow make it back to the MCU.

Clark Gregg Addressed Agent Coulson’s Possible Return In The MCU

While speaking on Love in the Time of Hydra: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D podcast, actor Clark Gregg shared how Agent Coulson was never really dead in the MCU timeline despite meeting his demise after his encounter with Loki.

[Coulson isn’t dead] in every timeline! Look, you are playing in a multiverse scenario in various timelines without you being like, ‘I don’t know, there are many multiverses here.’ People are very upset about whether things are canon [or not], and I love that Kevin [Feige] is [like] The Oz.”

When asked about his potential return as the famed agent in Avengers: Secret Wars, Gregg could not help but take it as a compliment.

Although he did not directly respond to it, he believes that there is a possibility given how significant Coulson’s role is from the beginning.

That’s really sweet. I just love that there’s a connection with Coulson, I think because he was such an early part of the thing and the kind of the human face of the world. But the canon of people that they feel that way about has grown, and there’s plenty… It’s hard for me to go, ‘Yeah, it’s alright, I had 10 great years, maybe 12.’

Agent Coulson was the first S.H.I.E.L.D member who didn’t originate from the comics but was created for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Even so, he quickly became a fan-favorite character thanks to Gregg’s incredible portrayal.

Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson Has Been A Vital Part Of The Avengers

Speaking with The Cosmic Circus, Gregg talked about the potential return of Agent Coulson in the MCU. He stated, “There’s just always a chance that—I mean, you know, it’s a multiverse.”

The actor also described how his character became the link to other important Avengers characters and how comforting it would be to return to it after playing it for many years.

I had already been this character in four or five of the movies, and every filmmaker who came along changed him a little bit. And he was a guy in charge of a dysfunctional family of kind of young agents, and that’s kind of what I was doing too. It was really nice to come back to, even though he was technically an LMD, to come back to old school Coulson for the very end.”

At this point, fans can only speculate on Agent Coulson’s possible return in Secret Wars; while the actor would love to do so, the final say will be coming from the Marvel boss.
