Despite Martin Scorsese‘s best hopes to collaborate with Daniel Day-Lewis for the third time, it appears that the Lincoln actor has no intention of returning to the screen. Day-Lewis’s friend and previous collaborator, Jim Sheridan, revealed that the actor told him he was done with films. Sheridan was speaking to Screen, while appearing for a Qumra event as a master in Doha, Qatar.

The Irish director worked with Day-Lewis in three movies, including My Left Foot in 1989, In The Name of The Father in 1993, and The Boxer in 1997. While he’s convinced that Day-Lewis is not coming back, Sheridan deeply wishes that he did. The director shared that movies are being moved out of the public domain into a private domain, suggesting that the streamers are ruining the art.

In this situation, Day-Lewis’s return could help improve the movie-viewing experience with quality films. Sheridan also added that the actor himself was tired of the 7000+ movie choices when he switched on a streaming service. Sheridan shared at the event (via Screen Daily):

“He says he’s done, I keep talking to him. I’d love to do something with him again. He’s like everybody else, he opens up the streamers and there’s seven thousand choices, none of them are good. Film has been moved out of the public domain into a private domain – you have a remote, you can stop it. It’s not the same experience. It’d be great to see Daniel coming back and doing something ‘cos he’s so good.”

Jim Sheridan further shared at the event that the industry is currently in the “emergency room” and requires a state intervention to save itself. Sheridan found it difficult to adapt to the new way of doing films, which is to work on four or five things at once. He was used to working with one film at a time and making sure that it reached the audiences in theaters before moving to the next. However, in the current scenario, he had to put his attention and money into different projects at a time.

Daniel Day-Lewis’s last film happened more than six years ago when he starred in Paul Thomas Anderson‘s film Phantom Thread. He announced retirement soon after, but fans kept hope since the actor took such long sabbaticals earlier in his career too. The Crucible actor largely avoided any public appearances in these years of retirement. However, he made a rare appearance recently at the National Board of Review Awards on January 11, 2024.

The three-time Oscar winner presented the Best Director award to Martin Scorsese for his latest film, Killers of the Flower Moon. The actor earlier worked with Scorsese in two films, The Age of Innocence and Gangs of New York. Scorsese shared in his acceptance speech that working on these two projects with Day-Lewis was “one of the greatest experiences of my life” (via Variety).

However, the excitement for fans came when Martin Scorsese jokingly made the comment, “Maybe there’s time for one more.” Day-Lewis just smiled at the comment, but fans were already speculating the actor coming out of retirement to work on Scorsese’s next project. They believed that it would be in Scorsese’s next planned Jesus film.
