Method acting and Al Pacino have become synonymous over the years. While there is no doubt the star is an excellent method actor, there has been a couple of instances where his method acting went a bit too far.

There are very few actors like Al Pacino, for he has rightfully earned himself a place among the greatest actors of all time. His unique style coupled with an array of iconic characters has earned him more than a few accolades. Despite being nominated numerous times, the Godfather star earned an Oscar for his role in Scent of a Woman. And it was for this movie that he scared his co-star, Chris O’Donnell with his method acting.

A deeply emotional, moving, and even life-altering film, Scent of a Woman follows the character of Al Pacino, who is a blind army veteran. The star even trained at a school for the blind and practiced tirelessly to develop his character from the ground up. While his co-star and the Batman and Robin star watched him closely during this time, he hoped he would get some constructive criticism from the legendary actor.

However, the star instead got a letter that kind of stated ‘Although I didn’t see you, I know you were great’. In an award ceremony years later, O’Donnell revealed the real contents of the letter,

“I couldn’t tell what you were doing because I sort of never saw you. Although it felt as if you were always with me, and from what I’ve heard, your performance is outstanding.”

Well, talk about method acting at its finest.

Method acting can make actors do some crazy stuff, like in the case of Al Pacino, it can make him trip off a bush which apparently he ‘couldn’t see’ while method acting. But what it can also do is make him threaten a truck driver.

One of the star’s most iconic characters is Frank Serpico, who is an NYPD officer, in the film Serpico. While preparing for the role, the star completely immersed himself in the character as usual. His method acting reached such a level that The Irishman star once pulled over a truck driver while driving and threatened to arrest him with the charge of exhaust pollution.

As bizarre as it seems, it doesn’t diminish the fact that Al Pacino indeed is a brilliant actor.
