While Secret Invasion took its pace and began exploring the vengeful battle between the shapeshifting Skrulls and humans on Earth, director Ali Selim admits to disobeying Marvel Studios. Discussing the violent events in the show, and the new character arc he gave to Nick Fury, Selim mentioned going against Marvel’s orders of not flipping through the original comics.

In an exclusive interview with Uproxx, Ali Selim confessed going through Brian Michael Bendis and Leinil Francis Yu’s original Secret Invasion comics. Prior to engaging himself in filming the Disney+ series, the director mentioned looking through the comics for complete knowledge. He further discussed the influence of classic movies on Samuel L. Jackson’s character.

Ali Selim Disregarded Marvel Studios’ Instructions For Secret Invasion 

As the Disney+ series Secret Invasion appeals to its audience with its violent battles between Skrulls and humans, and its riveting storyline, Ali Selim takes time to ponder upon his masterpiece. Discussing how he was warned to not read the comics, Selim confessed to going against Marvel Studios’ instructions. “The first thing I was told is don’t read the comics” the director stated.

Sitting for an interview with Uproxx, to discuss the MCU adaptation, Secret Invasion, Ali Selim stated, that he was clearly forbidden from reading the original comics. Thus, admitting going against Kevin Feige, Selim mentioned reading Brian Michael Bendis and Leinil Francis Yu’s original comics prior to shooting. “I didn’t say I didn’t read it… I said I was told not to read it,” Selim stated.

Further giving his reasons for disregarding Marvel’s instructions, Ali Selim stated, “I like to stay informed.” However, after reading the comics he realized why he was asked to stay away from them. “And then I can come to the end of it and say, ‘Oh, I see. That’s why they didn’t want me to read it.’” Selim stated.

Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven Helped Revamp Nick Fury’s Character 

Although Ali Selim went against Kevin Feige’s warnings and instructions, he definitely delivered fascinating character development for the actors. Balancing his disregard for Marvel Studios, with brilliant filmmaking, Selim discussed how he executed the characters with a “film noir” light.

Taking his idea to the board, about turning Samuel L Jackson‘s character, Nick Fury, into “more of a lone wolf, Western character”, Ali Selim confirmed how fans would really appreciate that. Thus, discussing the typical influence of Clint Eastwood‘s classic film Unforgiven on Nick Fury, Selim mentioned revamping the MCU character for the series.

After killing off Maria Hill in the first episode of Secret Invasion, as the show proceeded with Nick Fury, it revealed big secrets about him and made it clear how Ali Selim introduced the lone wolf character. With Episode 2, “Promises”, revealing Nick Fury’s secret marriage to Priscilla, who is a Skrull, the show took a major turn amid Skrull vs humans battle. Thus, with more revelation, Ali Selim’s take on Nick Fury’s character arc becomes prominent.
