The trajectory of an actor’s career is often a delicate balance of talent and opportunity. For Josh Hartnett, a decision made at a pivotal moment in his career would have far-reaching consequences. In the early 2000s, Hartnett was a rising star, captivating audiences with his roles in films like Pearl Harbor and Black Hawk Down. As his career ascended, so did the caliber of offers.

Josh Hartnett has undoubtedly presented his versatility as an actor on the big screen. But behind the screens, the actor holds one major regret that paved the way for Christian Bale. Hartnett added more to this in a recent interview with Buzz Feed UK. The host of the interview inquired with Hartnett about a rumor she’d heard online about him being in the lineup for Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight trilogy.

To this, the actor reflected on his past decisions regarding the legendary director with a notable sense of regret. He admitted, “I made a mistake, not kind of being more, I don’t know, just more open to the possibility of doing anything with him.” He did meet with Nolan, but at the time, he was hesitant about committing to a superhero role, believing his interest lay elsewhere.

In hindsight, he recognized that his reluctance to fully explore opportunities with such a visionary director was a missed chance. Hartnett had expressed the same sentiments in 2015 as well while speaking to Playboy that he was “so focused on not being pigeonholed.” But he wished he could have been more determined to overcome that fear.

He also talked about Christian Bale‘s impressive career trajectory, noting how the actor has successfully diversified his roles and found success beyond Batman. Further, regretting his own limitations at the time.

Christopher Nolan Sets the Record Straight: Josh Hartnett Was Never Offered the Batman Role

Last year, while appearing in the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the legendary director Christopher Nolan set the record straight on Josh Hartnett’s potential involvement in the Batman movies. He clarified that while he did meet with the actor about the role of Bruce Wayne, the actor never actually screen-tested for the part. Further, the discussions never progressed with Hartnett to an audition.

During that time, the actor was more interested in collaborating with his brother Jonathan Nolan’s project, The Prestige, rather than pursuing the Batman role. Nolan also reflected positively on their collaboration in Oppenheimer, noting that working with Hartnett has been a long-awaited opportunity.

Interestingly, while Hartnett was gunning for The Prestige, the role eventually went to Christian Bale. Hartnett then came to understand that key industry relationships were often established during significant projects like the first Batman movie.
