Margot Robbie has always been an iconic actress ever since she starred in her breakthrough role in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. Later on, adapting the role of Harley Quinn in the DCEU, Robbie maintained her career and fame.
The actress recently starred in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie which went on to earn a billion dollars worldwide. Claiming that Gerwig “changed the game”, people rallied against the actress’ remarks as a film like Captain Marvel also earned a billion dollars!
Margot Robbie’s Barbie Sadly Did Not Change The World
Although the movie showcased a great premise of feminism against the patriarchal world at hand, the words that Margot Robbie used in her interview seem to have backfired on her. With Barbie earning a total of $1.4 billion, Robbie was quite impressed with the 2023 movie.
In an interview with Deadline (via X), the Suicide Squad actress revealed that every time a female lead movie is pitched to the studios, Barbie will be taken as a reference point. Stating that Barbie made money despite being female-driven, Margot Robbie had quite an interesting choice of words which would soon backfire on her!
“[Director Greta Gerwig] has literally changed the game. From now on, it’s different because of what she’s done. Someone is going to come forward with another original idea that requires a big budget, with a female lead, they’re going to point to Barbie and say, ‘But that made money.’ Everyone’s gonna go, ‘Oh, right we’re gonna have to green light this’”
Although the actress meant it in an inspiring way, fans were too quick to remind the actress that even female-lead movies like Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel were also near the billion-dollar mark!
Wonder Woman Also Earned $800 Million!
What was supposed to be an inspiring statement for the world turned into a competition in which a bad movie earned a billion dollars. With fans tweeting out the names of Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel, Robbie’s words backfired immediately on her!

I mean Wonder Woman made over $800 million with a female lead and it didn’t “change the game”

Although Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie might have indeed changed the world, Barbie is one of the many movies contributing to shaping history. With a high rating of 7/10 on IMDB and 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie is available to rent on Apple TV+ in the U.S.
