It looks like there’s great news for nostalgia-loving PlayStation fans. For those who don’t know, PlayStation Plus allows people to enjoy games from previous generations on PS4 and PS5 consoles with its Classics catalog. Tomb Raider: Legend, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus were some of the nostalgic games added to the catalog this month.

Now rumors have surfaced that a PlayStation classic, which fans haven’t heard about for a long time, will soon be available on PS4 and PS5 consoles through the Classics catalog. So, what is this game, and when can it be added to the service?

TimeSplitters, a game where those who stumbled upon the magical gaming world of the 2000s spent their days, is rated for PS5 and PS4 in Taiwan Game Software Rating Regulations. So, what does this really mean? Well, it seems we have two options here: a sequel or the PS2 versions coming to the new Sony consoles via the PlayStation Plus Classics catalog.

While a sequel would be really great for fans, considering it’s adapted to today’s gaming technologies, it seems like that’s not exactly the case. Because the developer studio Free Radical Design was closed by Embracer Group last year. In fact, a few months later, gameplay footage of the reboot of the series was leaked. Yes, the one that is very similar to Fortnite.

This development largely eliminates the possibility of a new game and leads us to the only option we have, which is that the PS2 version of TimeSplitters will arrive on PS4 and PS5 with the PS Plus Classics catalog. At the same time, there is no information in the database about when this will happen.

There is also not much doubt about the reliability of the Taiwanese rating website. This site previously correctly predicted Octopath Traveler’s arrival on PS4 and PS5, and a similar situation may be in store for TimeSplitters. Sadly, for now, all we can do is patiently wait for the announcement from Sony.

What Happened to the Timesplitters Series?

TimeSplitters is a first-person shooter video game series that left its mark on the 2000s and especially the PS2 era. The first game in the franchise was announced as a PS2 exclusive in 2000. Things changed with the second entry in the series, which arrived in 2002, and was released for GameCube, Xbox, and PS2.

The third installment, TimeSplitters: Future Perfect, was released in 2005 and continued the legacy of the previous games with strong sales figures. That got the rumor mill going for the fourth installment. We actually got the official announcement in late 2007, courtesy of developer Free Radical Design’s website.

Unfortunately, there were a number of negative developments during the game’s early development, such as not being able to find a publisher and pushing the potential release date so far that we never received a launch. Players lost hope over the years, and finally, with the closure of Free Radical last year, the last hopes were lost.
