Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead was one of the most happening shows that graced television long before the author achieved more success with Invincible. Being a comic book first, the show had a slew of plot points that it did not adapt from the comics, which Jeffery Dean Morgan wishes was not the case.
Jeffery Dean Morgan began starring in The Walking Dead as Negan in Season 6, where he was introduced with his trusty weapon, Lucille, the baseball bat wrapped with barbed wire. Morgan talked to CheatSheet about one scene that he wished was adapted into the show from the comics, one that was profoundly important for the character.
Jeffery Dean Morgan wished he got to film one scene from the comics
Speaking with CheatSheet, Jeffery Dean Morgan talked about the one scene that he wished the show adapted from the comics, in particular, the scene where Negan loses his famed weapon. The actor talked about why he thought that scene was important and why it should have been a part of the show. He said:
“In the comic book, when he loses Lucille, I miss that scene. We never got to do that scene and I always loved it. Lucille represents so much to him, beyond a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire. I always loved that, but we’ve moved so far away from that at this point. We’ll see what [showrunner] Angela [Kang], [writer/producer] Scott [Gimple] and the gang come up with.”
Jeffery Dean Morgan would have enjoyed portraying the scene, and clearly understood why it was so important for the character to have that played out in the show. However, as is the case with most adaptations, The Walking Dead had to choose between what it could keep and what it had to jettison, without the story and pacing of the show feeling bloated.
Lucille was an important aspect of Negan’s character
Lucille was more than a weapon for the character, or even a merchandising opportunity. The weapon is an integral part of Negan’s character, something that defined the character since his introduction. The comics also spend a lot of time establishing the weapon as an extension of the character of Negan, some of the show is also masterful in its adaptation.
Negan losing Lucille would have been a huge moment for the character on screen, being almost akin to losing a character that Negan loved so much. The story, ideally speaking, should have given the scene the same reverence and time as the MCU did with Mjolnir, which was shattered by Hela, which would have given fans the time and the space to appreciate what the weapon brought to Negan’s character.
The Walking Dead can be streamed on Netflix.
