“I believe we can balance the scales if Tom Cruise would lower his quote by a mere $29 million. I realize this might be a bit unfair since he’s not here to defend himself and I really don’t want to put this all on one man, but if I had to, that man would be Tom Cruise…I assure you my salary would not make a difference. My annual salary is the budget for Altoids on one of Tom’s movies.”
While Alec Baldwin’s comments may have sparked a conversation about the role of top male actors in perpetuating the gap, actress Sharon Stone, and Jennifer Lawrence have been voicing for a long time.
Stone told to PEOPLE:
“I remember sitting in my kitchen with my manager and just crying and saying I’m not going to work until I get paid.”
Jennifer Lawrence, being one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood still so much underpaid than her male counterparts. She once told Vogue:
“It doesn’t matter how much I do. I’m still not going to get paid as much as that guy, because of my v*gina?”
She told Vanity Fair:
“It’s extremely uncomfortable to inquire about equal pay. And if you do question something that appears unequal, you’re told it’s not gender disparity, but they can’t tell you what exactly it is.”
While there have been some positive strides in recent years, women still earn significantly less than men for their work in Hollywood.
A-List Actresses Speak Out on the Hollywood Pay Gap

“This is a problem that is in every single industry. If you have the same capacities and you are doing the same job, it is criminal not to pay the same salary.”
Meryl Streep has always been vocal about the pay gap in the industry.
She told Time:
“Men are ashamed that they’re getting that money. It used to be, everybody didn’t say anything about it, so it was kind of fine. Now they’re a little more nervous that somebody will find out what they make vis-a-vis their co-star.”
“That’s the best vigilance: the vigilance of privilege,” she continued. “People will always be battling and whining about it. When the other side says, ‘You know, I think that sucks’—that’s great.“
As these influential women continue to use their voices to bring attention to the issue, there is hope that Hollywood will evolve into a more inclusive and equitable space.
