There have been rumors circulating for a long time about Hollywood stars Lucy Liu and Bill Murray’s feud on the sets of the blockbuster hit, Charlie’s Angels (2000). Bill Murray joined the cast of Charlie’s Angels as John Bosley and it was rumored that Lucy Liu physically attacked Murray after he allegedly questioned her acting skills.
Over two decades later, Lucy Liu has shared her thoughts on the possibilities of a Charlie’s Angels sequel. Liu portrayed the role of a crime fighter Alex Munday opposite Cameron Diaz’s Natalie Cook and Drew Barrymore’s Dylan Sanders in the 2000 action-comedy, a film adaptation of the famous 1970s television series.
Is There Any Chance of Charlie’s Angels 3? Lucy Liu Gives Her Honest Reaction
Whether Charlie’s Angels 3 will ever be made or not, Lucy Liu shared her views. While attending the premiere of her new film Presence at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival on January 19, Liu reacts to the possibility of a third Charlie’s Angels.
“I honestly don’t know how that’s going to be feasible,” she told Variety.
“There have been so many iterations, even after the fact… In some ways, it’s such a strange thing to think about it. Times have changed so much since that first one.”
The Shazam! Fury of the Gods star continued:
“At that time, when we were doing publicity, they had never before had three women on a magazine cover. They didn’t even know how to do it. It was such a strange thing for women to collaborate and be seen as colleagues and friends. It was such a big moment in time, and now it’s shifted. Even when I was doing ‘Ally McBeal,’ there had never been a lead woman in that way. Obviously, there was Mary Tyler Moore and things like that, but really the focus has changed. I’m not in charge of that, but I always enjoy they time that I had and then I move on. I never really dwell on anything like that. But I really would be shocked if that happened.”
However, McG, the director of the first two Charlie’s Angels movies, stated that he is open to returning for a third Charlie’s Angels film while chatting with Entertainment Weekly in August 2023. The filmmaker said it would require “a long discussion” with Liu, Barrymore, and Diaz.
Lucy Liu Spoke About the Altercation With Bill Murray
While revisiting memories of the altercation that happened between Bill Murray, a recognizable name in the industry, and Lucy Liu on the set of Charlie’s Angels, Liu said how Murray started to insult her.
“I won’t get into the specifics, but it kept going on and on. I was, like, ‘Wow, he seems like he’s looking straight at me,‘” said Liu.
Calling Murray’s language “inexcusable and unacceptable,” Liu said at the time on the Los Angeles Times’ Asian Enough podcast.
“I was not going to just sit there and take it. So, yes, I stood up for myself, and I don’t regret it.”
The movie received mixed reviews from the audience. On a budget of $93 million, the movie grossed over $267 million at the global box office, making it a commercial success.
