Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy go back to before the Dark Knight trilogy began. Murphy who originally auditioned for the role of Batman, bagged the role of the DC supervillain The Scarecrow, all because of his eyes. Nolan recalls in an interview with Murphy for Entertainment Weekly,

“I saw a picture of you with your shaved head and your crazy eyes — no offense. I remember being struck by your presence, literally from that one photograph, and then started to look into who you were, and what you’d done, and got very excited about the idea of meeting you, and having you screen test for Batman.”

And from there started the iconic friendship, which is still at large. Murphy, a huge fan of Nolan’s work, readily agreed to the role of Scarecrow. Even when offered to reprise the role for The Dark Knight Rises for just one scene, he boarded on without question. Recollecting on the casting call, Murphys says to Nolan,

“I remember when you called, you said, ‘You want to read the script?’ and I said, ‘You know what, I don’t actually want to read the script. Just tell me what I’m doing, just tell me what my motivation is, and then I want to see the movie.'”

Hence, was born the iconic scene of the anarchic Jonathan Crane in the Kangaroo Court in The Dark Knight Rises.

“Not at all. If I could cast Cillian in every film I ever do, and just lean on him for the rest of my career, I’d be a happy man.”
