While Catherine Zeta-Jones has done many great roles, she’s also forever linked to the swashbuckling legend of Zorro. Her fiery performance as Elena Montero in “The Mask of Zorro” (1998) left a lasting impression, surprising audiences with her sword-wielding skills and passionate spirit.
But Zorro’s legacy extends beyond a single film. The masked vigilante has thrilled fans for decades, and the question of who will take up the mantle next is always a burning one. Now, in a recent interview, Zeta-Jones herself has spoken out, revealing who she believes possesses the charisma and talent to become the next Zorro.
Catherine Zeta-Jones Would Love To See Lisette Olivera In A Zorro Reboot
Continuing the swashbuckling spirit, it turns out Catherine Zeta-Jones‘ choice for the next Zorro is one of her co-stars. Having recently starred alongside Lisette Olivera in the National Treasure: Edge of History, Zeta-Jones believes that the young actress might do great in the role.
Zorro’s a legend of fiction who started out in books way back in 1919. By day, he’s a normal dude named Don Diego. But by night, he dons a mask and cape and becomes a sword-fighting hero who defends the downtrodden against tyranny and injustice. He leaves his mark with a fancy “Z” and is basically a total legend.
All the adaptations so far have shown a male Zorro, as first written in the books by Jonathan McCulley. However, Zeta-Jones is open to watching a female Zorro, and even more if it is played by Olivera, as she revealed in an interview with Comicbook. Olivera can even play Zeta-Jones’ character Elena de la Vega.
“Lisette, who I’m working with right now on National Treasure, I see a lot of myself in this young lady,” Zeta-Jones explained in our interview, which you can check out above. “I see a kind of passion for her craft, I see a commitment to what she’s doing, and I see a very long career ahead. And then she’s just such a lovely young lady. So I think she has all the elements to be the next Elena de la vega. I would love to see a lady Zorro.”
The last fans saw Zorro in theatres was in 2005 and would love to see the vigilante make a return to defend the citizens.
Catherine Zeta-Jones and Lisette Olivera’s National Treasure: Edge of History Canceled After One Season
National Treasure: Edge of History was a Disney+ adventure series that unfortunately didn’t get a second season. It served as a spin-off to the popular Nicolas Cage movie franchise National Treasure.
The show centered around Jess Valenzuela, played by Lisette Olivera, a young, brilliant dreamer who uncovers a hidden family secret. This secret leads her on a thrilling treasure hunt connected to her past. Catherine Zeta-Jones played a pivotal role, though shrouded in mystery as a possible antagonist.
Despite a promising cast and initial viewership placing it among the top-streamed shows in the US during its debut week, Disney+ opted to cancel National Treasure: Edge of History after just one season. The reason for the cancellation isn’t entirely known, but it could be due to a number of factors, including viewership numbers dropping off over time or the series not quite capturing the magic of the original films.
