Attack on Titan, the epic story of Eren Jaeger created by Hajime Isayama finally ended a few days ago after its 10-year-long journey, giving the fans a closure to the series. The ending, though controversial for a lot of fans was flawless and greatly appreciated by fans all over the world.
Although the story did not conclude with a happy ending, it still gave a satisfied feeling to the fans. There was a sense of comfort in seeing Eren finally being able to rest after his constant urge to “fight”, which was greatly shown by Isayama. Although everything went to shambles as shown in the aftermath, fans kind of anticipated that outcome.
However, even after creating such a beautiful series and a brilliant ending, Isayama had one concern that slightly ruined Attack on Titan for him and the audience in a way. Although the majority of the people may have not thought about it so far ahead, hardcore fans still kind of knew what was coming, and that was Isayama’s biggest regret.
Hajime Isayama Wanted To Change The Ending
In an interview with the New York Times, Isayama admitted to wanting to change the ending of Attack on Titan. He explained how he was tied down to the story and the ending that he thought of when he originally thought of the story. He said:
“It would have been nice if I could have changed the ending. Writing manga is supposed to be freeing. But if I was completely free, then I should have been able to change the ending. I could have changed it and said I wanted to go in a different direction. But the fact is that I was tied down to what I had originally envisioned when I was young.”
Isayama stated that writing manga was supposed to be free but because of how he envisoned the story in the beginning he could not change it. This became his biggest regret as some hardcore fans were able to anticipate the ending already making the outcome predictable.
Hajime Isayama Felt Like Eren Jaeger
While talking about the need to change the ending of Attack on Titan, Isayama explained that when he felt like he could not change the ending and had to go through with the one he envisioned earlier when he was young, he felt restricted within his art. He said:
“Manga became a very restrictive art form for me, similar to how the massive powers that Eren acquired ended up restricting him.”
He stated that he felt similar to Eren when he realized that the massive powers that he acquired ended up restricting him and in a way became the reason for his destruction. Nonetheless, Attack on Titan was truly a magnificent series and an inspiration for millions of fans and other manga writers too.
