Actor Ralph Macchio’s portrayal of Daniel LaRusso in the Karate Kid movies not only made him a household name but also transformed his life in many ways. The iconic films, starting with 1984’s The Karate Kid, brought Macchio into the spotlight and forever associated him with the determined underdog who learns karate and life lessons from Mr. Miyagi.

While Macchio values the opportunity he got, there is still one thing he hated about the franchise. The creators of the movie wanted a James Bond franchise sort of approach when they were deciding what to do with Daniel LaRusso’s love interest, which led to a new love interest in each installment.

In a past interview, actor Ralph Macchio highlighted that he didn’t like the fact that he had different love interests in different Karate Kid movies. The creators wanted a James Bond-like approach so Elisabeth Shue was removed from the franchise quite early. Macchio said,

“I never looked at it from the perspective of Ali’s character or from the perspective of Elisabeth as an actor. As an older person, there was a recognition of missteps, of things I should have done differently.”

Elisabeth Shue played the character of Ali Mills in the first Karate Kid movie. Although her time was cut short, she once again got to play the character more than 35 years later in the spin-off series, Cobra Kai.

The actor has some regrets

The actor regretted that he didn’t call Shue at the time, and didn’t take a stand for the actress when she was removed from the franchise. He said,

“I dunno. They probably would have said to me, ‘Get outside, Macchio, and start practicing your karate kicks…’ Today, I think, there would be a different conversation. Women in movies were often thought to be disposable. I see that now. Then? I didn’t see it. It was a case of youth being wasted on the young. I was swept up in everything that was happening in my life.”

The actor was sure that the creators would’ve sidelined his request but he never tried. He regrets that he didn’t oppose their ways.
